Military and Veteran Discounts

Veterans Advantage’s VetRewards Card expands its military partnership with Amtrak to include Veterans Advantage discounts on rail fares with Amtrak Vacations and its packages on year-round travel without blackouts.

The Veterans Advantage discount on the rail fare portion of the vacation packages offered by Amtrak Vacations covers more than 300 rail vacations with options to depart from more than 500 Amtrak rail stations across the country. Amtrak recognizes the VetRewards Card, a special privacy protected ID only for active duty, retirees, veterans, guard, reserve and their families at its stations nationwide, online and by toll free phone for same day travel with no advance purchase requirement.

Last year, Amtrak, which provides the nation's intercity rail passenger service, expanded its relationship with Veterans Advantage to include immediate family members, who may book Veterans Advantage discounts independently. Additionally, Amtrak accepts same day bookings for its Veterans Advantage discounts, and waives the three-day advance purchase requirement for VetRewards Card members. These new benefits also apply to Veterans Advantage's Amtrak Vacations bookings with discounted rail fare.

Veterans Advantage includes, at no additional cost, $50,000 of global emergency travel Insurance from Travel Guard with MedEvac services for members who travel more than 100 miles from home. This benefit covers member travel booked with Veterans Advantage discounts on Amtrak and Amtrak Vacations.

Veterans Advantage members who travel to Amtrak Vacations destinations will benefit from the company's secure military verify technology when using their VetRewards Card ID to qualify as eligible for military discounts. Veterans Advantage protects veterans' privacy and supports enhanced military security with the issuance and administration of its VetRewards Card, the nation's first secure military ID. Veterans Advantage uses FTC recommended 'de-identification' methodology in its verify technology platform to safeguard veterans' personal information when redeeming military discounts.

The nation's travel industry leaders and leading retailers offer military savings with the VetRewards Card. In addition to Amtrak and Amtrak Vacations, other Veterans Advantage partners include United Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Greyhound, Avis/Budget, Wyndham Hotels, Choice Hotels, and Red Roof Inn.

Don't Let Heat, Humidity Harm Your Car

Hot temperatures, humidity and long drives can be tough on your car. The Canadian Automobile Assocation recommends regular vehicle maintenance to help handle the harsh heat.

Eleven tips to help prevent your vehicle from getting scorched:

  1. Flush your antifreeze before it becomes acidic and causes damage.
  2. Clean the top of your car battery and the connections to prevent discharge.
  3. Park in the shade and use a sunshade across the dashboard to protect your car's interior. When the temperature reaches 86° F outside, the inside of your vehicle can feel like 122° F.
  4. Avoid using acid-base tire cleaners as they can cause rubber to crack.
  5. Wash your vehicle regularly to prevent damage from dead bugs, acid rain, tree sap and bird droppings.
  6. Replace cracked or torn windshield wipers and stock up on washer fluid to maximize your visibility.
  7. Inspect and replace air filters as they may become clogged with dirt, debris and dust.
  8. Inflate your tires properly, as heat causes tires to expand and overinflated tires can cause uneven tire wear or a blowout.
  9. Change your engine oil regularly to reduce accelerated wear due to heat.
  10. During the summer months, your car battery can lose its charge 33 per cent faster than in the frigid winter weather.
  11. Before your next road trip, visit an auto service center for a thorough vehicle inspection.

10 Spots for Authentic Philly Cheesesteaks by Nicki Chodnoff

Growing up in Philadelphia, I found cheesesteaks were part of my existence, like drinking liquid and breathing air. Juicy, cheesy and beefy – not to mention the delicious fried onions and soft rolls. Having consumed so many cheesesteaks over the years, I think I developed palate memory.

Cheesesteaks are Philadelphia icons, a tourist draw and a cultural obsession. Often imitated, the cheesesteak is rarely duplicated successfully outside of Philadelphia. Since moving far away from Philadelphia, I’ve yet to find a cheesesteak that can equal any found in the metro area.

Steak sandwiches were Philadelphia’s answer to fast food years before the national chains came into the picture. They are fast, portable and readily available at steak shops, delis, food trucks, pizzerias and even some high-end restaurants throughout the region. As long as the establishment is locally owned, and not part of a chain, you are bound to get a decent steak sandwich or cheesesteak.

So we are on the same page, a steak sandwich or cheesesteak is a long, crusty roll (my favorite rolls were Amoroso) filled with thinly sliced sautéed ribeye beef (ribeye is the standard though some places may use other thinly sliced cuts of beef) and melted cheese. Leave out the cheese and it’s just a steak sandwich. Generally, the cheese of choice is Cheez Whiz. American, mozzarella and provolone cheeses are equally delicious and available in most places. Cheesesteak preparation lies in the balance of flavors and textures. Some judge steak sandwiches and cheesesteaks on the “drip” factor, the juice and/or cheese that drips out of the roll. Other toppings may include fried onions, sautéed mushrooms, ketchup and hot or sweet cherry peppers or a combination of some or all of those toppings.

Some sandwich shops (some are known as luncheonettes – small informal restaurants that serve lunch) offer a cheesesteak hoagie or steak hoagie, a hybrid that combines the cheesesteak or steak sandwich with lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise.

The cheesesteak made its official debut in 1930. Pat Olivieri was a South Philadelphia hot dog vendor who decided to put some beef from the butcher on his grill. A taxicab driver noticed the alluring aroma and asked for his own steak sandwich.

The next day, as the story goes, rumor of the delicious lunch had spread, and cabbies around the city came to Olivieri demanding steak sandwiches. Soon after, Olivieri opened up a shop on 9th Street and Passyunk Avenue, Pat’s King of Steaks, to sell his new creation. Eventually, according to legend, he added cheese to the recipe.

Today, Pat’s grills sizzle 24 hours a day, as do Geno’s, the rival steak shop across the street. For 40 years, the two shops have waged a friendly competition to win the title of best cheesesteak in town, with Geno’s founder, Joe Vento, claiming it was he, not Olivieri, who first added cheese to the cheesesteak.

When ordering a cheesesteak at Pat’s Steaks, (other shops have similar routines) you want to let the cashier know whether you want a steak or cheesesteak, what type of cheese you want and if you want fried onions. You need to be as quick and concise as possible. You order and pay before you get your food.

Locals are so adept at ordering, they have it down to three words: saying “one whiz with” to the person behind the counter means that you would like one cheesesteak [denoted by the “one”] with Cheez Whiz as your choice of cheese [denoted by the “whiz”] and with fried onions [denoted by the “with”]. Similarly, saying “one provolone without” would secure you a single cheesesteak [one] made with provolone cheese [provolone] and without fried onions [without]. Or saying “two American with” would get you two cheesesteaks both with American cheese and fried onions.

Lines can be long at peak times, and if you don’t have your order and money ready to go, you may be sent to the back of the line.

The Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau compiled a list of where to find the best cheesesteaks in Philadelphia. You can’t go wrong getting a steak sandwich or cheesesteak at any of their recommended places. In my opinion, a steak sandwich or cheesesteak anywhere in the Philadelphia area is better than what you get in your hometown.
