Tips for Driving in Winter Conditions
|It’s barely fall, but winter will be here before we know it. Driving an be particularly challenging in the snow. Thrifty Car Rental has some useful tips to help drivers stay safe on the road.
Traveling away from home or in a foreign country you can encounter unknown conditions or terrain. Be prepared for the worst, especially when driving in snowy, slushy, or icy conditions and the following tips may come in handy:
- Know where you're going before you set out in your car, as everything can look different under a layer of snow and signs may be obscured. If you have an in-car navigation or GPS, program it before you set off to find the best route.
- Listen to weather and traffic forecasts and check for road closures. If bad weather is predicted, listen for guidance from weather forecasters and traffic agencies. If possible delay your trip. A few hours can make a difference.
- Before your warm the car and ensure that all lights, windows and mirrors are clean and free of snow and ice. Don't use hot water on glass – the sudden change can crack the glass; an ice-scraper is inexpensive and effective. On the inside, use the defroster to remove condensation and activate front and rear windscreen heaters.
- Make sure that you and your passengers are equipped for bad weather. Dress warmly and have a rug or blanket in the trunk. Winter sun can be low and cause glare, especially in snowy conditions, so have driving glasses in your car.
- Drive slowly – Accelerating, stopping and turning takes longer on snow-covered roads.
- Increase following distance – The normal dry road following distance of three to four seconds should be increased to eight to 10 seconds in snow and slushy conditions.
- Watch out for black ice - it may not be visible. Try not to brake sharply. If you do go into a skid, drive into it, and never brake on ice.
- If your car gets stuck in snow, shift into a high gear, keep your wheels straight and gently go back and forth until you are free. A spade or old rug can help in case you can't drive straight out.

Chinese Customs Travelers Should Know
|To help American travelers visit this vast and diverse country, Hotels.com compiled some cultural traditions, etiquette tips and quirky insights to keep in mind.
Below are some behaviors and traditions U.S. travelers can learn to prepare for travel to China:
- Smile! According to a Hotels.com survey, 12 percent of Chinese respondents said they always greet fellow guests on a hotel elevator, but 35 percent only greet guests on an elevator if they look friendly and smile.
- Tea etiquette: Always serve yourself last when pouring tea – start with the eldest person at the table first. To show appreciation for someone pouring your tea, tap two fingers on the table.
- Where's #4? You will never see a hotel or building with a fourth floor. The number four is considered bad luck, as it has similar pronunciation to the word "death."
- Elevator etiquette: Only 24 percent of people admit to having passed gas in an elevator, but it's more common in certain APAC countries according to a Hotels.com survey, which found that 28 percent of Chinese respondents admitted to doing so on an elevator.
- Yes or No? It is traditional to refuse something at least once, as it is a sign of politeness. So when someone offers you the last bite of fish, you're expected to refuse once or twice to seem humbled by the offer.
- Cheers! Toasts are made by holding a glass with two hands.
- Close talkers: In China, personal space is minimal or nonexistent. Be prepared for some close proximity on trains, stores and elevators.
- Punctuality: Timeliness is synonymous with respect. Be on time or early for tours, hotel check-out and dinner reservations.
