Protect Your Bank Accounts While Traveling
|Many travelers hunt for deals to save their wallets from undue strain. Unfortunately, most fail to protect their wallets when traveling, which is more important than finding the top flight deals and hotel discount codes.
One of the best ways to save money on travel is to proactively avoid the expensive consequences of carelessness. Knowing what to carry in your wallet while traveling — and what to leave at home — will eliminate the headache of losing money to excessive fees or identity theft while you’re away from home.
Important Things to Keep in Your Wallet
- Cash - When traveling, domestically or overseas, carry some cash for taxi or bus fare, tips and miscellaneous expenses that can arise unexpectedly. For instance, many restrooms in Europe require a fee to use — you wouldn’t want to be caught in need of a pit stop without a euro handy.
- Limit the amount of cash you carry to about $50 — enough to get by in most situations but not so much that you’d be devastated if it were lost or stolen. Be sure it’s the local currency and in varying denominations.
- Debit Cards – Don’t have more than one debit card on hand. Remember to call your bank prior to leaving and notify them that you’ll be traveling, and for how long, to prevent a freeze on your card for suspected fraud. To prevent identity theft when pulling out cash, plan time to visit an ATM from a well-known bank and avoid swiping your card in isolated or otherwise questionable area.
- Credit Cards – You need a credit card when an ATM can’t be found, or to perform a large transaction such as placing a hotel deposit. However, limit the number of cards you carry to two.
Additionally, overseas travelers should bring a credit card with an embedded smart chip. Purchases based on the chip are common in Europe and Asia and merchants sometimes can’t accept magnetic-strip cards.
Watch out for foreign transaction fees. Carrying a card that doesn’t charge these fees can save you three percent or more on every dollar spent overseas.
Extras - In addition to cash and cards, there are a few items you should consider keeping in your wallet when out of town to prevent the problems travelers sometimes face from blowing up into huge, costly ordeals.
For instance, anyone who has ever lost a phone knows your money and information is likely gone forever. However, when your phone disappears while you’re in a different state — or worse, a foreign country — losing access to important phone numbers can be panic-inducing. Carry important phone numbers in your wallet in case your phone is lost or stolen.
Also, keep your Red Cross blood type card in your wallet in case of a medical emergency that requires receiving blood. Have your medical and dental insurance cards on hand to prevent any delay in receiving care should a health problem arise while you’re away from home.
Things Not to Carry in Your Wallet - While it might make sense to have certain things with you while you’re away from home, carrying unnecessary items in your wallet could put you at serious risk for trouble. Here’s what to leave at home:
- Checkbook - There’s no reason to carry around a checkbook, especially while traveling. An identity theft time bomb waiting to happen, your checks offer personal information, such as name, address, bank account and routing numbers, that would be an identity thief’s dream.
- Social Security Card - Never carry your Social Security card on your person, not even a copy. Keep this in a secure place like a safe deposit box or home safe (the same rules apply to your birth certificate).
- Passport - While you can’t travel out of the country without a passport, it’s dangerous to carry it around when not absolutely necessary. Keep it in your hotel safe (don’t leave it out in the open and susceptible to theft) and carry a photocopy of the page with your photo instead.
- PIN Numbers and Passwords - Especially for those with multiple accounts, it can be tough to remember several account passwords and PIN numbers. Including this information in your wallet along with your cards is asking for identity theft. If you really can’t memorize your most important PINs and passwords, keep them encrypted on your smartphone instead of plainly written in your wallet. Do so at your own risk.
When organizing your wallet before traveling, ask yourself if there’s anything inside you would regret having included if the wallet was stolen or misplaced. Saving money starts with practicing safety, which includes protecting your finances from unnecessary fees and excessive risk for fraud.

Israelis Not Allowed on Saudi Airlines
|New York may revoke landing rights to Saudi Arabian Airlines.
The New York City Public Advocate, who acts as an ombudsman, threatened to expel Saudi Arabian Airlines from New York’s John F Kennedy Airport because it refuses to sell tickets to Israeli-passport holders. Bill de Blasio said the discrimination breached U.S. federal law.
If you are booking on online, when we checked, the Saudi Arabian Airline’s website has no drop-down menu options for anyone holding an Israeli passport. By this time, the Saudi Arabian Airline’s website may have changed because so many were appalled. There is a drop-down menu option for Antarctica citizens. Interestingly, there are no citizens of Antarctica. The temporary scientist residents or tourists of Antarctica are citizens of other nations. In addition to refusing to sell tickets to Israeli-passport holders, Saudi Arabian Airlines appears to prevent passengers simply looking to transfer in Saudi Arabia to another country.
The director general of Saudi Arabian Airlines defended his company’s decision to discriminate against Israeli citizens by refusing to fly them from U.S. airports, according to Arabic media. The airline’s director general, Khalid al-Melhem, said the discrimination policy was acceptable because Saudi Arabia does not recognize Israel as a country.
“If there is an absence of political relations between [Saudi Arabia] and any other country, we will not allow that country’s citizens into the kingdom,” Melhem told the Saudi Al-Watan newspaper.
“[Diplomatic relations] also apply to transit passengers. In case the plane is delayed, the passenger will have to enter the country, and at that point it would be very difficult to let him into [Saudi Arabia] if there are no diplomatic relations.”
De Blasio said he had formally written to the airline warning that unless it changed its policy he would move to have it banned from U.S. airports.
“Saudi Arabian Airlines uses U.S. airports and yet bans Israeli citizens from being able to fly on their airline,” Bill de Blasio was quoted as saying in the New York Post.
“If the airline does not change its policy we will act to make sure they’re excluded from United States airports, starting with JFK.”
U.S. federal law states that an “air carrier or foreign air carrier may not subject a person in air transportation to discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex or ancestry”.
It is the second time Saudi Arabia’s policy towards Israelis has caused anger in the U.S., which is the Jewish state’s closest ally.
In 2011, the American Jewish community protested against the alliance between Saudi Arabian Airlines and American carrier Delta based on its policy not to allow Israeli passport holders on board.
De Blasio said while the discriminatory policy was a rumor in 2011, it was now clearly official.
“It’s quite formal now. You can see with your own eyes on their website,” he told The Algemeiner newspaper.
“And by now making it official they violate our laws. It was discovered that the airline will not book Israeli passengers after a sting operation by de Blasio’s staff.
When a member of de Blasio’s staff called the airline, trying to book a ticket from JFK to Mumbai, India, identifying themselves as an Israeli passport holder, the caller was told by an agent that they would not be able to fly. “Since you have Israeli nationality, you will not be allowed to go on Saudi Airlines,” the agent said, after consulting a supervisor.
“No city in the world has closer ties to Israel than we do, and yet Israeli citizens are being discriminated against right here at JFK airport. It’s not only illegal; it’s an affront to who we are,” De Blasio said. He added that he “will act to make sure they’re excluded from United States airports, starting with JFK” if the airline does not change its policy.
