Seeing a child being pat down at a U.S. airport makes most people see red. The head of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA)said the agency was working to make security screening procedures less intrusive for small children.
Airport screeners will now make repeated attempts to screen young children without invasive pat-downs. The agency is working to put that change in place around the country, and it should reduce, but not eliminate, pat-downs for children, an agency spokesman said.
The TSA drew criticism when a video of a six-year-old child undergoing a TSA enhanced pat-down surfaced on the internet. Because the child moved while being screened by a body scanner, the blurry image prompted security officers to conduct a manual pat-down.
Children and the elderly are mentioned as passengers who should not be considered serious threats. Critics of a one-size-fits-all approach to airport security prefer distinguishing non-threatening, low-risk passengers from those who could pose a potential risk. Despite the complaints, no clear answer is given as to how this can be done.
The TSA will test its trusted traveler program at select airports as early as this fall. The program will allow you to volunteer background information in exchange for faster, less intrusive screening. The TSA plans to test the lighter screening concept with flight crews, beginning with pilots.

Warwick Hotels offers active duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces on leave with their families a 25 to 50 percent discount for up to two rooms, allowing for privacy and family time.
The discount is part of an Armed Forces R&R package available at five U.S. Warwick Hotels, in New York, Dallas, Denver, San Francisco and Seattle. The percentage of discount varies – usually at least 25 percent off the best available rate that may be applied to two rooms, including suites (except in Seattle, where the suite offer is not available). This makes it easier for the whole family to reconnect, yet still provides privacy when needed.
Warwick Hotels began providing the military discount in March 2008. Rates and discounts vary by season, but a discount is offered most days, including holidays, based on space availability. Each Warwick hotel may also offer discounts in their restaurants or on amenities like Wi-Fi.
Reservations for the Armed Forces R&R Package can be made by telephone or the Warwick Web site. Click on the Special Offers button at the top of the home page, scroll down to the Armed Forces R&R package and select the hotel you would like to book. Use rate code WKMILE.

With last season’s snowfall still on the mountain, Solitude Mountain Resort rolls out their season pass options. Solitude Mountain Resort is a year-round, family-friendly resort located 12 miles from the edge of Salt Lake City.
Ticket Paks are sold in five, 10 and 15 day increments, beginning at $35 a day – almost half the window rate in season. For an additional $4 a day you can "rollover" credit from unused days to next season. It’s like an insurance policy for people who may not ski all 10 or 15 days.
Utah’s most flexible season pass, the Custom Season Pass, allows you to choose which days you want to ski all season. For example, if you choose to ski on just Wednesdays all season, it will cost $279 for a season pass. You may choose to mix and match a weekday with a Sunday and only pay for the days you actually use.
The Family Pak allows adults to get 12 days to split between them, either equally or more for one parent. Two children (juniors ages seven to 15) are given unlimited season passes and children six and under ski free. And a family can choose two additional add-ons such as spa treatments, demo rentals, ski school lessons, or pizzas, included at the $859 price. Additional adult days and juniors days or passes can be added for larger families.
Traditional season passes are available with the Monday to Thursday option for $499 and a full season pass is $999, a reduction of $100 from last season.
