Free Shuttle from NYC and LI

Spending a weekend on the North Fork, NY is easier thanks to an initiative from the North Fork Promotion Council.

The North Fork Link, a fleet of luxury vans, will take riders around the region, saving the hassle of driving while helping to alleviate summertime traffic.

Visitors from Long Island and New York City can arrive to Riverhead and points east to Greenport via the Long Island Railroad or public and private bus services to connect with "The Link." The hop-on, hop-off service will allow you to enjoy the wineries, breweries, restaurants, shops, art galleries and points of interest at your own pace without worrying about driving or parking.

To address concerns about increased traffic in the area, The North Fork Promotion Council (NFPC) applied for and received a New York State Empire State Development (ESD) grant to provide a transportation solution. The North Fork Link shuttles have leather seats, WiFi and power outlets. On-board local "concierges" assist with itineraries, answer questions, and provide information about the North Fork.

The North Fork Link runs every 30 to 45 minutes on Saturdays from the LIRR train station in Riverhead to Mattituck and Greenport, with designated stops along the villages of the North Fork. You can access real-time information and location updates by downloading the North Fork Now app.

The North Fork Link operates until Aug. 25, 2018, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

    World Spree Amazing Vietnam Deal

World Spree’s 2019 Amazing Vietnam tour at 13 days, is the longest of the “budget” tours. Unlike other tours that use four-star city hotels, Amazing Vietnam features five-star city hotels. Rather than a cruise of a few hours on Halong Bay, Amazing Vietnam’s Halong Bay cruise is an overnight cruise to remote parts of the bay. World Spree does not take tours to “shopping traps” in stores that pay commissions to tour operators.

The Amazing Vietnam tour is a good deal, but early birds who plan ahead will find the September 2019 trips are a better deal at $1,599. The price includes roundtrip international air fare, all transportation and transfers in Vietnam, hotel accommodation with daily American buffet breakfast, four other meals (this was Anthony Bourdain’s favorite cuisine), sightseeing tours with entrance fees, an overnight cruise on Halong Bay, discounted optional tours, baggage handling and professional English-speaking tour guides.

The tour takes in Hanoi, with its French-colonial buildings, old city and mementos of Ho Chi Minh. There’s a glimpse of China Beach on the way to Hoi An, a historic port town with photogenic architecture and good shopping. Then stop at Hue, the former imperial capital known for its Citadel with its pavilions and palaces. You fly to Saigon, officially Ho Chi Minh City, with its French-colonial landmarks. There are two optional tours: to see the livelihoods of the Mekong Delta’s villagers and the underground Cu Chi Tunnels.

All prices are per person, double occupancy and are subject to availability. For more information, at the World Spree website click “Destinations,” then “Vietnam.”

The Point of Pin Point, GA - - article and photos by Nicki Chodnoff

For nearly 100 years, Pin Point was a nearly forgotten, isolated community on the banks of the Moon River just south of Savannah, GA. This is the same Moon River that songwriter and Savannah native Johnny Mercer wrote about.

The African American community was founded by first generation freed slaves from nearby Ossabaw, Skidaway, Pigeon and Green islands in the 1890s.

Where water meets land, Pin Point was so named because of its tiny size. Here, you’ll learn about the area’s Gullah/Geechee culture firsthand. This tightly knit community, much like an extended family, kept its traditional ties to West Africa, making it one of the country’s last remaining Gullah-Geechee enclaves. Pin Point’s isolation and caring people helped the community and culture endure and face the test of time. In its hey-day 300 people lived in Pin Point. The numbers dwindled down to 100 people who still call Pin Point home and found a way to remember. Herman “Hanif” Haynes helps the public remember with informative, hands-on tours where he and practically his entire community worked at the A.S. Varn & Son Oyster and Crab Factory.

The factory is no longer active, but the red roof and white cinderblock building that once housed the A.S. Varn & Son Oyster and Crab Factory is still here, standing since 1926 when it was first erected. Now the re-purposed buildings serve as the Pin Point Heritage Museum complex that shares the story of Pin Point through interactive displays, exhibits, memories and stories about what life was like for workers who made their living here for 60 some years. The ever-present, expansive views of the marsh are everywhere.

It took hard work and dedication to harvest the bounty of the sea. Women picked crab at the factory while rocking baby bassinettes crafted from crab pots. In the afternoon, men returned in their wooden bateau boats with their bounty from the sea: oysters in the winter and crabs in the summer. The oyster and crab cannery was Pin Point’s economic engine, putting food on the table while employing the men and women of Pin Point.

Economic ups and downs marked the ebb and flow of the factory and the destiny of the families who lived and worked here. Through a combination of overfishing and drought, the factory closed in 1985. Preservation of the oyster and crab factory provides an opportunity to experience this life through a tour. More than a museum, it’s a glimpse into the past and a way to preserve the community that remains.

Guide Hanif Haynes and an informative documentary film about Pin Point shown during the tour includes memories about Archie Varn, also known as “Mr. Archie” and “Old Man Varn,” who owned the canning factory. Remembered as a benevolent employer, Varn was known for his generosity and kindness to local residents. Mr. Archie bought the uniforms, shoes and bats for kids to play baseball and even took employees and their families to Atlanta and Washington, D.C., to watch major league baseball games. According to Haynes, “Old Man Varn looked out for a lot of people.”

Hanif Haynes and the other guides working in the museum are descendants of the original Pin Point residents. Personable and wonderful storytellers, Haynes and the documentary film recount the stories of community members and their deep spirit and faith. You come to understand what life was once like in Pin Point. Though daily life was physical and tough, community members recalled the past fondly with a devotion to the place and one another.

Pin Point was the perennial backwater but gained national fame when its native son Justice Clarence Thomas was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1991.

After watching the documentary, we head to the crab boil area where Haynes taught us about crabbing and about different crabs. We then went into the museum and learned about some more historically significant people from this area.

Walking to the marsh, Haynes explained how the bateau, the large gray wooden boat worked. Standing by the marsh that leads to that great expanse of water, gave you an idea of how little you and Pin Point seemed in the scheme of things.

Our group was split in two. One half went into the Oyster House while the others stayed outside. The group outside showed the people in the Oyster House how the men would get the oysters freshly caught oysters inside to the women who shucked them and received $1 per gallon. After the demonstration, everyone came into the Oyster house where we were learned more facts about life in pin point

Next, we went into the Deviled Crab house where Haynes taught us some Gullah words and phrases.

There are displays with the tools of the trade, equipment and members of the community.

You leave Pin Point thinking about how this community nurtured its residents for generations. The point of Pin Point is the timeless lessons it offers concerning what really matters most in life: family, friendship, connection and community.
