Win $45,000 Emperor Penguin Trip
|ENTER BY AUG. 31, 2010 - - One person can turn their passion for the environment into a $45,000 Antarctic expedition for two. The online competition is sponsored by Quark Expeditions, SeaWorld and Busch Gardens Conservation Fund.
The winner will sail with Julie Scardina, SeaWorld's Animal Ambassador, aboard the icebreaker Kapitan Khlebnikov from Ushuaia, Argentina to the Snow Hill Island Emperor Penguin rookery, in Antarctica, Oct. 13 to Nov. 7, 2010. While on board Scardina will relate behind-the-scenes stories of animal training and the conservation efforts she supports.
To enter, you must describe online in 300 words or less your personal efforts to protect wildlife, and why you should be the one to adventure with Julie to Antarctica. The competition closes Aug. 31, 2010. The top five competitors will be chosen by popular vote. A panel, consisting of Julie Scardina and representatives from Quark Expeditions and SeaWorld, will select the overall winner from the top five. Voters will be allowed to change their vote throughout the competition.
The expedition cruise is sold out, so winning the competition is the only way to get aboard. The prize package includes return economy airfare from the winner's nearest international gateway to Ushuaia, Argentina; one night of hotel accommodation in Ushuaia; and 13 nights with meals in a twin cabin aboard the icebreaker. The expedition plans to spend three days at the Emperor Penguin rookery watching adult birds tend their chicks.

Consumer Reports Money Adviser's editors sifted through the fine print and named the best rewards cards for airlines and travel.
Many people bank their miles over several years with the hopes of getting tickets for their dream vacation. But the best strategy depends on whether you earn your miles through frequent flying or frequent spending. If you are a frequent traveler, you'll want to choose a specific airline credit card that augments the miles you earn on the routes and carriers you regularly fly.
If you accumulate miles through spending, you might be better off with a card that gives you cash back so you can buy your own tickets without restrictions.
The AmEx Starwood Preferred Guest card is a good hotel/air card if you often stay at Sheraton, Westin, W, and others in the Starwood chain of 940 hotels. You'll earn one point per $1 spent on eligible everyday purchases and double points at Starwood hotels. If you stay at Hilton hotels, take a look at the AmEx Hilton HHonors or Citi Hilton HHonors Visa.
Six Ways to Save on a Road Trip - Many Americans will travel by car to cut costs on their vacation. Here are some tips for stretching your travel dollars:
Avoid ATM add-ons. To dodge paying out-of-network fees for cash withdrawals, ask your bank for a map of its ATM locations along your route.
Map it. Use one of these free online road-trip planners to build a custom map and itinerary: AAA TripTik (chose "Online Trip Tiks" in the left column); Yahoo trip planner; or Rand McNally TripMaker Planning Tool.
Prep your car. Before you leave, have your mechanic check the level of all fluids, inspect belts and hoses, check the battery and tires, and inspect the air-conditioning system.
Conserve gas. Avoid hard acceleration and braking. Keep tires properly inflated.
Look for lodging deals. Take advantage of membership discounts and perks from hotel loyalty programs or groups like AARP or AAA.
Get smart. Smart phone applications can be useful on the road and some are free. Navigation apps, like those from Navigon, let your phone function like a stand-alone GPS. Aloqua, Urbanspoon, and Yelp find nearby attractions and restaurants in your price range.

|Many people experience some form of stomach infection at some point in their lives, usually when overseas in a new environment. The symptoms usually include diarrhoea, which in its most extreme form becomes dysentery. The after effects can last for several years.
Dysentery is a highly contagious bacterial infection, which is spread by poor hygiene. It is usually spread by hand to mouth transfer from person to person, or from surfaces contaminated by an infected person. Outbreaks are more likely to occur in overcrowded areas where poor hygiene practices exist. It's far more likely to happen when traveling to new areas, particularly in Latin America, Africa, Middle East and Asia. People are more likely to develop dysentery in a new geographical area, not only because of poor hygiene but because of the lack of immunity.
Symptoms usually appear between six hours and three days after infection. They include watery diarrhoea, sometimes with blood and mucus. This is usually accompanied by nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever and general malaise.
Wash your hands after using the toilet, after contact with an infected person and regularly throughout the day.
Wash your hands before handling, cooking and eating food; handling babies and feeding young or elderly people.
Keep contact with someone known to have dysentery to a minimum.
Wash laundry on the hottest setting possible
Avoid sharing items such as towels and face cloths
To reduce the risk of developing dysentery, observe the following basic rules:
Usually, dysentery clears after a few days and no treatment is needed. It is important to replace any fluids lost through diarrhoea.
If you develop this condition, make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Water, fruit juice and isotonic (sports) drinks that replace salts and minerals are best. If the condition persists, see a doctor as the condition may deteriorate without enough salts and fluid in the body. Avoid contact with other people until you are symptom free for at least 48 hours. In severe cases, antibiotic treatment or hospital admission for intravenous therapy is necessary.
If you have amoebic dysentery, a doctor may prescribe an antibiotic called metronidazole. As with any antibiotic, make sure you complete the prescribed course. After this treatment is finished, take diloxanide, a drug that kills the amoeba.
Since most cases of dysentery are short, antibiotics are only used if the dysentery does not clear up on its own. Antibiotics can also be used to stop the spread of dysentery to other people if there is a high risk.
