Travel Hazards, Safety Tips about Taking Pets on Vacation

Each year millions of pets accompany their families on vacation. Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. (VPI) reminds pet lovers that the key to a safe vacation for our furry family members is preparation. VPI sorted through its database of more than 525,000 insured pets to determine the most common travel-related pet injuries.

    Below are the results:
Vomiting or diarrhea from Motion Sickness - the average cost for treatment $226
Heat stroke when a pet is left in a car - the average cost for treatment $575
Bruising or contusion from a sudden car stop - the average cost for treatment $226
Sprain from jumping out of a car - the average cost for treatment $185
Nasal cavity foreign object from inhaling debris when is head sticking out of window - the average cost for treatment $406
Laceration when hit with debris when head is stick out of window - the average cost for treatment $329

VPI encourages you to plan ahead with these travel tips to ensure that their furry friends are safe during summer excursions:

If traveling by car, secure your pet with a safety harness or well ventilated carrier to restrain them in case of a sudden stop or accident.

Never allow your pet to hang out the window. Opening the window just a few inches will allow your pet to enjoy the breeze without inhaling debris or being struck by any objects. This will also prevent any temptation your pet may have of jumping out of the car.

Feed your pet a smaller meal before your trip to prevent an upset stomach. Carry plenty of water to prevent dehydration.

Bring your pets' toys to accompany them during travel. The familiar smells can help comfort your pet and keep them occupied during the trip.

Never leave your pet in a car unattended. Even with the windows cracked, temperatures in a car can increase drastically.

Make sure your pet is wearing identification at all times in case she becomes separated or lost. Verify that your pet's ID tag is up-to-date, durable, and includes your mobile phone number.

Pack a recent photo of your pet along with current vaccination records. If your pet becomes lost, having a current photograph will make the search easier.

Book a pet-friendly hotel. With more than 25,000 hotels in the U.S. allowing pets, there are plenty of properties from which to choose. Don't assume all pets will be allowed, though: Some hotels place limits on the size of the dogs they allow. Call to check that your dog will be welcomed.

Look up details about a veterinary hospital near your destination (phone number, hours, driving distance). If your pet has a medical emergency you'll be prepared and know where to go.

If your itinerary includes air travel, ask your veterinarian for a formal pet health certificate, which is required by most commercial airlines.

Always consider your pet's personality and determine if she or he can handle traveling, or if a change in surroundings may be too far outside the comfort zone for your pet.

Haggle for your Hotel Room Rate

RoomAuction.com lets you haggle for a better price by sending the offer directly to the chosen hotel. The service is free and no registration or credit card details are required until a booking is confirmed.

Many hotels listed on the site feature a “bid now” option, where you can bid as low as 50 percent of the rack rate (most discounts run in the 25 to 35 percent range). Hotels let you know whether your offer is accepted or rejected within 48 hours.

Boleslaw Drapella, the CEO of RoomAuction.com advises how to make a hotel accept your bid. ”If you're looking for the best deals, better bid at the last minute, when hoteliers are more anxious to fill rooms. You can also increase your chances for a weekend stay, if you plan to spend Sunday night and choose the option of having a dinner in the hotel restaurant. A bid is not binding, so you can place your offer in a couple of hotels and then choose the one that accepts the best deal.”

There are three simple steps to complete your deal – choose a hotel, offer how much you want to pay for your stay and wait for the hotel to accept the offer. RoomAuction.com is an easy ways to go on vacation without over spending.

4 Tips for Flying with Your Pet

You may plan a trip with your family including your pet Fluffy. Over two million pets and other live animals are transported by air every year in the United States. If you're traveling abroad, you'll need to meet the animal health requirements of the country you're visiting. Before getting on the plane, these tips from USA.gov will help make traveling with your pet safe and enjoyable.

Ask your airline about requirements for and restrictions on traveling with a pet. Check with your airline to find out if they allow pets in the passenger cabin. If you can't bring your furry friend on your flight as checked or carry-on baggage, you might be able to ship your pet as cargo. Also, you'll likely have to provide a certificate from a veterinarian stating that your pet is in good health. However, airlines may not require health certificates for service animals used by people with disabilities.

Make sure you bring an approved kennel. The kennel for a carry-on pet must fit under the seat in front of you, and your airline will likely require your pet to stay in the kennel during the flight and in the airport. You'll want to de-clutter your pet's kennel before you get to the airport, in case TSA agents need to do a physical inspection of your pet's carrier.

Carry a leash. Whether you need to walk Fido through a metal detector, or carry him through, bringing a leash can help keep your animal under control in the busy airport environment.

Consider your pet's comfort. Traveling, particularly loading and unloading, can be stressful for an animal, so you should consider your pet's comfort. Try feeding your pet a light meal two hours before getting to the airport. Walk your pet before leaving for the airport, and again before checking in. While you should leave the sedatives at home, if you're thinking about giving your pet something to help it sleep easier on the trip, always check with your veterinarian first.
