Fre.e Stay for Volunteer RV Campers

Around the country, RV campers help national wildlife refuges maintain operations and provide or expand visitor services. More than 170 refuges across the U.S. offer f.ree RV hookups or the use of simple cabins or bunkhouses in return for volunteer labor.

Many camper volunteers are "snow birds," retirees who migrate each winter from Northern states to warmer locales. Two refuges that benefit are the Moapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge in Nevada and the Swan Lake National Wildlife Refuge near Sumner, Missouri.

The 1.6 million-acre Moapa Valley Refuge, 60 miles north of Las Vegas, recently opened to the public on Saturdays only, for the first time in 30 years. The reason, volunteers rotate staff duties with a few year-round residents. RV campers at Swan Lake Refuge staff the visitor center on weekends.

At Swan Lake Refuge, a favorite destination for bird watchers and hunters, the public wanted weekend access as the visitor center was open on weekdays only. This year, staff built two trailer pads for electric, water and sewage hookups for "work campers," who are hosted for fr.ee March through October in return for their services. Staffing the visitor center on Friday nights and weekends now tops the list of those services. Visitor center hours will now be 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m. to dark Friday and Saturday; and noon to dark on Sunday through October.

There is a refuge within an hour's drive of most major U.S. cities.

A list of participating refuges is online at this link.

      Explore Chicago’s Neighborhoods

Chicago’s neighborhoods are what makes the city so vibrant. This summer, the Chicago Office of Tourism puts the neighborhoods front and center by showcasing them during Explore Chicago: Take a Neighborhood Vacation. The program runs through Sep. 30, 2009.

From Bronzeville to Beverly and Uptown to Pullman, neighborhood activities include fre.e outdoor festivals, farmers markets, art fairs, gallery walks, and neighborhood tours. Visitors and residents can explore Chicago though new Family Day Camps, Chicago Greeter visits, and Neighborhood Scavenger Hunts.

Some highlights of the summer campaign include:

Hyde Park Instagreeter Outpost - - Drop by the Hyde ParkArtsCenter on Saturdays through Sep. 26, 2009, for a f,ree one-hour walking tour with a city-wise volunteer. Most recently known as President Obama’s neighborhood, Hyde Park is also home to the University of Chicago and one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most popular prairie-style designs, Robie House. Visits are on a first come, first served basis and no reservations are needed.

Family Day Camps - - $10 per person - - Family Day Camps take place on eight dates throughout the summer and go to four neighborhood destinations: Garfield Park, Pilsen, Lincoln Park or Jackson Park. They are guided by a camp leader and trek using public transportation, a walking tour, art making project, music lesson, lunch and nature activity.

Neighborhood Scavenger Hunts - Fr.ee scavenger hunts immerse you in the action. Different hunts will lead you to answers about museums, galleries, restaurants, boutiques and parks. The proof will be in the digital photos of yourself near each find. Besides the thrill of the hunt and photo memories, a grand prize could be yours. It will go to a randomly selected contestant who completes all the hunts, has online photos to prove it and answers all questions correctly.

Take time to explore the neighborhoods through various tours, festivals, museums, parades, and markets. Some annual favorites are the Printers Row Lit Fest (June 6 & 7); Pilsen Mexican Independence Day Parade (Sep. 12); Lakeview East Festival of the Arts (Sep. 26, 27); 80th Annual Bud Billiken Day Parade and Picnic in Bronzeville (Aug. 8); and the Renegade Craft Fair in WickerPark (Sep. 12, 13). Another great way to explore the neighborhoods is to take a Chicago Neighborhood Tour. Neighborhood Tours leave from the Chicago Cultural Center and head to communities like Devon Avenue; Hyde Park and Kenwood; Little Italy, Pilsen and Little Village; the Pullman Historic District; and Humbolt Park, Wicker Park and Ukrainian Village.

The Synesthesic Plan of Chicago: Check out the Visitor Information Center at the Chicago Cultural Center through Sep. 30, 2009 for an exhibition that explores Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods through sights, sounds, tastes, and smells..
