|As one of the many free things to do in Los Angeles, TV show tapings are on the top of many visitors' to-do list. Watching live sitcoms, talk shows and game shows is part of the essential LA experience. When you come during peak production season, August through March, it's also an opportunity to see your favorite stars up close and personal and maybe the chance to get your five seconds of fame.
Here's a quick how-to guide.
The best way to get tickets is to order in advance through vendors such as Audiences Unlimited or hollywoodtickets.com. Both feature sitcoms and talk shows. Tvtix is also a good resource for talk shows. On Camera Audiences specializes in reality TV shows.
If you can't find tickets through any online vendors, check the show's website. Some talk shows such as the "Jay Leno Show" or the "Ellen Show" offer tickets directly through their sites.
Another way to get tickets is to try your luck with standby tickets. Just like with airlines, standby means you wait in line and if any seats open up, you're free to go in. "Last Call with Carson Daly" is one of the few shows that offers stand-by tickets.
TV Show Taping Tips - Get the most out of your TV show taping experience by knowing before going. A few helpful tips:
Get there early - eally early: Studios overbook their tickets, so it's a good idea to show up at least 90 minutes early to wait in line. If you get there too late, you may not get in.
Plan to be there for about three to four hours: Sitcoms can take a while to film, and the audience is required to stay for the entire time.
Bring layers: Studios are notoriously cold, since all the lights and cameras heat everything up.
Dress for a cameo: Want to get on camera? Studio staff place the best-dressed audience members up front, where you're most likely to get filmed.
You can visit online ticket vendors for a complete list of TV show tapings that are available. According to TV Tickets.com, here is a quick list of some of LA's most popular tapings:
Accidentally on Purpose
Two and a Half Men
America's Funniest Home Videos
New Adventures of Old Christine
Rules of Engagement
Dr. Phil Show
Free tickets are offered online for most shows starting 30 days prior to show date. Age restrictions are posted on the show schedule. All shows are in the Los Angeles area.

Travel can be frustrating and rewarding. A pain and a pleasure. As you prepare to travel this summer, here are some travel gear and gadgets that hopefully will make your travels more of a pleasure.
EcoUsable Ech2o filtered Water Bottles : If you hate the taste of tap water and don't want to fill up landfills with plastic bottles, consider the ECH2O stainless steel bottle. It is especially good for travelers because it includes its own portable filtration system. Each filter filters up to 100 gallons of water. Like a water filtration plant, the filters remove up to 99.99 percent of chlorine, odor, dirt, sediment, pathogens such as giardia, toxic chemicals and heavy metals. So wherever you are, you can drink the water, even from streams, lakes and pools. The 25 ounce bottles is $39.99 and the 18 ounce is $34.99. Purchase online.
Kwikpoint Translator: If you don't have a smart phone where you can use the Google translator or a portable language translator, Kwikpoint International Translator is the next best thing. The compact picture card has more than 400 color illustrations to help you order food, get medical attention, or get a hotel room, without uttering a word. All you do is point to the illustration . Plus there are key phrases in nine languages, metric conversions and a clothing conversion chart. $14.99 for the Laminated Passport Size. Available online.
PortaPocket:Tourist make easy targets. So getting robbed while traveling is a fear many tourists have. PortaPocket carrying cases can ease that fear. They are an 18 inch strap with a credit card-size case that fits around your calf, thigh, ankle or arm and can be worn under your clothing to minimize the risk of theft. No more stuffing things in your socks for security. They're great for carrying keys, credit cards, cash and anything else that's small and important. You can be sure that I'll be using a Porta Pocket when I travel to South America this year. The detachable case offers ease of use while inserting and removing items, yet the case stays firmly in place when in mounted position. PortaPocket accessories such as a belt and larger cases allow you to carry slightly larger items. Available online from $19.95
Cinzia Trendies: Being near-sighted and needing glasses to see distances and not to read made me overlook Cinzia Trendies Pocket Eye sunreaders. But when my husband, who needs glasses to read, looked at the Trendies, he thought they were a great idea. When out and about, his sunglasses can't help him when he needs to read something outdoors. The other option is to buy prescription sunglasses. Cinzia Trendies Pocket Eye sunreaders meet that reading need for men or women as they come in red, black, bronze and gold. Definitely for people on the go, the sunreaders feature foldable frames in two shapes - rectangular and oval, compact mirrors, and tiny durable cases making sunglasses fashionable and functional. Retail price $24. Available online.
4 Survival To Go 72 Hour Kit: When traveling distances by car alone, the notion of breaking down or getting caught in a storm is always in the back of my mind. So putting the water resistant, bright orange 4 Survival To Go 72 Hour Kit in my trunk made sense for my recent road trip. Whether you drive alone or take the family along, being prepared for emergency situations is always a good idea. The kit can see you and your family through 72 hours. That's three days. Packed into a lunch box size bag with pull out compartments, the kit includes a dust mask, baseball cap, plastic poncho, 2400 calories of emergency food, water purification tablets, sleeping bag, hand-cranked flash light, duct tape and a first aid kit and more. 4 Survival recommends you have a kit in your home, office and car. Since the 4 Survival To Go 72 Hour Kit is packed so compactly, it can serve double-duty. Store at home and when it's time to hit the road, put it in your trunk. When you purchase the kit, it retails for $99, put a Post-It note inside the kit to indicate when you put it in service. Be sure to replace the Aqua Blox included in each kit every five years and check the food. Available online.
isAStrips: I can't tell you how many times I catch the hem of my pants or a sleeve and they tear. This always seems to happen at the airport or on my way to a meeting or event. Well, now there are isAStrips - - versatile, multi-use, body and apparel "fix-it" tapes - - to the rescue. The transparent, hypo-allergenic, double stick fashion tape has a place in my travel "take alongs." It can secure or repair necklines, bra straps, clothing, pant hems, shoe straps, accessories, scarves or jewelry. You can even attach an isABelt (from the same company) onto a pair of pants or trousers that don't have belt loops. IsAStrips come in a half-inch and 1 inch thick size with 36 strips in each box. A box sells for $6.95 at the company's web site.
These are a few of the many travel-related gear and gadgets available. More items will be presented in the new Travel Gear & Gadgets page featured on the Alternative Travel Page at On The Go Publishing, which debuts in July 2010.
