Passengers Face Lie Detector Tests
If you thought pat-downs and wanding was intrusive, security may go to a while new level in Russia. Airline passenger traveling to or through Russia will have to take a lie detector test. The new security measure, to start at Moscow's Domodedovo airport about July, is geared to identify terrorists and drug smugglers.
Initially, passengers thought as "suspicious" by the FSB, the security service that succeeded the KGB, will take the test. Eventually, it will apply to all passengers.
Test takers will pick up the handset of a "truth verifier" and will be asked questions. If someone fails, they are accompanied by a guard to a cubicle where questions are asked in a "more intense atmosphere." The four questions asked are: your full identity, have you ever lied to the authorities, are you carrying weapons or narcotics. To cut delays to a minimum, passengers will take the test after putting their shoes and baggage through the X-ray machines and before retrieving them. Officials insist that it will take between 30 seconds and a minute.
The verifier machine, developed by an Israeli company, can establish if answers come from memory or imagination. Currently, some insurance companies in Britain use the technology to screen for fraud.
