Starting Fare for Tokyo Taxis Cut
|The starting fare for taxis in Tokyo's 23 wards for the first 1.054 kilometers was reduced to 410 yen on Jan. 30, 2017. After the first 1.054 kilometers, the fare rises by 80 yen per 237 meters.
The starting taxi fare in Japan was previously 730 yen, above the international average. It’s been lowered close to the international average. Taxis are recommended to tourists from abroad for "choinori," or a short-distance ride in Tokyo, since taxi fares in Japan's capital have now become reasonable. The new rate does not apply to all areas in Tokyo. The Tokyo taxi industry hopes that the cut in the starting fare will increase the number of inbound tourists taking taxis in Tokyo.
With the launch of the new service, the Tokyo Hire-Taxi Association (THTA) released a video showing specific occasions in which Tokyoites typically take taxis. The video is to help inbound tourists and potential visitors understand when and on what occasions short-distance taxi rides are convenient.
Occasions on which "choinori" is convenient:
- When you have a small amount of baggage: transporting baggage
- Short-distance trips: to hotels, railway stations and hospitals
- Trips at night
- When you get lost: trips to places you've never visited & sightseeing.

Are Tourist Card Packages Worth It
|Online moving platform Movinga.com produced a study, in cooperation with TravelBird, comparing the savings of tourist city passes as opposed to purchasing tickets individually.
Movinga carried out the research after releasing their 2017 Relocation Price Index which detailed, in part, local costs of public transportation. They teamed up with TravelBird to expand on this study. Since most tourist passes contain all-inclusive public transport cards and discounts on museums and activities, the companies wanted to investigate the value of these convenience deals.
The Index compares the cost of a weekend with and without a tourist pass in 20 cities. To do so, the price of two one-day passes for public transport plus entry to three popular tourist destinations in the city was calculated and compared to the price of a 48-hour city pass plus discounted entry costs to the same tourist destinations. The costs for the two one-day passes were taken from research for the 2017 Movinga Relocation Price Index and the city pass price was taken from tourism boards for each city. To create a sample itinerary, three popular paid tourist destinations (e.g. national galleries, museums, and popular tours) were selected based on Tripadvisor popularity rankings. The Index is ranked based on the savings made with a welcome card.
The results show Vienna, Frankfurt, and Rome’s tourist passes offer the most savings. This compares to the Paris, France, who has the most expensive city pass at €109.00 or about $115.26. Buying the Paris city pass costs more than individual admissions.
A weekend in Rome breaks down as follows:
- Without a city pass, you pay €12.50 for two days of public transit, €12.00 for a ticket to the Colosseum, €10.00 for a ticket to the Castel Sant’Angelo, and €20.00 for a ticket to the Galleria Borghese. That’s €54.50 (about $57.63) in total.
- With a city pass, you pay €28.00 for the pass, €7.50 for the Colosseum, €5.00 for the Castel Sant’Angelo, and receive free entry to the Galleria Borghese. That’s €40.50 in total, making the welcome card worth it with €14.00 ($14.80) in savings.
Further findings from the study include:
- Cities whose city passes save more than they cost – with savings more than $5 are: Vienna, Frankfurt, Rome, Cologne, Rejkjavík, Budapest, and Hamburg.
- Cities whose city passes cost more than they save: Paris, Prague, Oslo, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Brussels, Munich, Lisbon, and London.
- Cities whose city passes cost about as much as they save: Berlin, Copenhagen, Dublin and Warsaw .
City pass benefits and savings vary from city to city. Keep in mind calculations were based on three visitor activities. So the Parisian pass which offers free entry to multiple in-demand attractions, might work out better for the person planning a packed weekend. Or you may benefit buying separate public transit passes and paying in full for activities, especially when you can discovery that city in a unique way.
The study offers insight into the cost of a city pass and how savings increase and decrease depending on how many attractions you visit with each city pass program.
When looking to visit a new city, check the costs of your itinerary with and without a welcome card to see which option offers the best balance of value and convenience.

Don’t Let Tire Trouble Ruin Travel Plans
|With spring and summer in sight, the thought of proper tire maintenance is likely not at the forefront of many drivers’ minds. To help raise awareness of the importance of safe tires, the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) encourages all drivers to ensure that their vehicle’s tires meet safe driving standards before hitting the road.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an estimated 11,000 tire-related crashes occur yearly, resulting in nearly 200 fatalities.
Performing regular tire inspections and taking extra precautions before long drives is one of the simplest ways to protect yourself and the ones you love.
Unfortunately, fewer than 20 percent of consumers properly check and inflate their tires, often resulting in at least one tire that is significantly underinflated according to NHTSA data. This can leave drivers at increased risk for flat tires, blowouts or loss of tread – all which contribute to crashes. Additionally, poor tire maintenance can result in greater fuel consumption and shortened tire life.
The California Office of Traffic Safety reminds all drivers to keep the following tips in mind to ensure proper tire care:
Check tire pressure regularly – at least once per month – according to your car manufacturer’s recommendations for pressure levels. Remember to check the spare, and take extra care before long drives.
Inspect tire tread. Ensure that tread grooves are free of foreign objects, and lookout for built-in tread wear indicators, or “wear bars,” to appear. This means the tread is worn down to one-sixteenth of an inch and needs to be replaced.
Perform regular tire rotations if recommended by the manufacturer, usually every 5,000-8,000 miles. Some vehicles do not require tire rotations, so refer to your owner’s manual for guidance.
Avoid overloading your vehicle to prevent excessive heat inside your tires. Passengers, cargo and roof racks all contribute to the vehicle weight. Refer to your owner’s manual for the maximum recommended load for the vehicle.
Lookout for potholes or other objects on the road, and slow down if you are unable to avoid them.
Take extra care near curbs, especially when parking.
For a free brochure, go to NHTSA or 888/327-4236. For additional tire safety information, visit Safe Car.
