Live Like a Local With a Local
|Dublin-based Homestay.com takes alternative hospitality travel to a new level. More affordable than hotels, more adult than couch surfing and more personal than rentals, hosted home stays are an alternative for a genuine experience.
You can get off the beaten track and stay and engage with hosts in 50,000 homestay listings in more than 150 countries.
Guests come from all demographics and solo travelers account for 60 percent of bookings as they feel more confident in a homestay. Families stay with other families to save money and introduce their children to new cultures. In a city with festivals and major events, it’s a solution for a hotel room shortage. Couples traveling with other couples find homestays a congenial way to enjoy foreign destinations. Guests get insider info about restaurants, transportation, attractions and shopping. Lasting friendships are a possible perk.
Homestay.com makes it easy to find the right hosts, destination and dates by filtering search results by amenities, catering, pets and hobbies. To book, contact hosts via the messaging system, and when the host confirms availability, a 15 percent deposit is paid through Homestay.com. To get acquainted face-to-face before arrival, you can video call through the website. Hosts generally want to know the reason for traveling, a guest’s age, interests and special requirements to prepare a proper welcome. Guests pay the balance to the host during the stay. A light breakfast is included in the rate, and sometimes additional meals can be arranged.
With a global average nightly rental rate of $46, homestays are a money saver. For Homestay.com guests it’s about more than money. The typical Homestay.com guest is not a student though the concept originated in the offline educational travel sector. The majority are 35 years old and up, 22 percent are 55 years and older and nearly half have salaries approaching $80,000.

New Manatee Observatory and Education Facility
|Florida Power & Light Company opened Manatee Lagoon, an FPL Eco-Discovery Center in Riviera Beach, FL so you can see and learn about manatees, the environment and how these endangered marine mammals depend on warm water during the chilly winter period.
Prior to Sep. 11, 2001, before security restrictions changed, you could access the Riviera Beach plant grounds to see manatees in the warm water outflows of the facility. Today, Manatee Lagoon sits on five waterfront acres with views of the Intracoastal Waterway and offers hands-on, interactive exhibits to learn about the endangered and unique Florida manatee, and the flora and fauna of the ecosystem it inhabits.
For decades, the warm water outflows from the FPL Riviera Beach plant have attracted hundreds of manatees that follow a migration pattern handed down from mother to calf.
The Center offers free admission, two levels of exhibit and meeting space, a boardwalk to observe manatees, picnic areas, pavilion, café and gift shop. Galleries highlight manatee anatomy, migration patterns and the ecosystem of the Lake Worth Lagoon.
Manatee viewing is at its peak November through March. Factors that determine optimal manatee viewing include water temperature, ingoing and outgoing tides which impact lagoon water temperatures and the availability of nearby food sources.
Manatee Lagoon is open year-round, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. The facility is closed on Mondays and major holidays.

Save on Arctic Circle Cruises
|A visit to the Arctic is on many bucket lists. What questions should you ask when booking a cruise on the Arctic Ocean?
Todd Smith, founder of AdventureSmith Explorations, (http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/) shares what he calls “a range of conditions” in the May through September Arctic summer. These conditions help to determine itineraries and passenger experiences.
For example, early season (late May through early July) polar bears on ice floes are prevalent. In July and August ice is more disbursed, allowing land access and explorations of nutrient-rich waters favored by whales. September nights bring the aurora borealis.
The experiences you seek may determine the ship you choose. AdventureSmith Explorations' fleet of expedition ships cruising to the Arctic carry 78 to 148 guests and are outfitted to travel in polar waters. They are all fairly similar in terms of ice class and amenities. For more intimate explorations, AdventureSmith recommends vessels carrying 16 to 20 guests that offer the close-up exploration as larger expedition ships but access shallow harbors and small islands.
The length of a cruise and the price come into play. Following are some specials on 2016 Arctic cruises.
The per person based on double occupancy rate on the 11-day Home of Vikings cruise aboard the 116-guest Sea Spirit is from $4,995. For bookings on the May 20, 2016, departure two guests sharing the same cabin travel for the price of one. This tour through fjords begins in Iceland and explores South and West Greenland. Sea kayaking along this rugged coastline is a favorite pastime on this adventure.
Save up to 25 percent with an Early Booking Discount for designated Arctic cruises in 2016; up to 25 percent on premium cabins and 15 percent on non-premium cabins aboard select Sea Adventurer and Ocean Nova 2016 departures booked by Apr. 15, 2016. Triple and Quad cabins are excluded. This discount cannot be combined with other offers and is subject to availability. Excluded are the June 12 Spitsbergen Explorer, July 4 Spitsbergen Circumnavigation and Aug. 15 Three Arctic Islands.

Turn Airport Downtime into Lifesaving Layover
|Airport travelers can put their time to good use and take five minutes to learn the lifesaving skills of Hands-Only CPR via interactive training kiosks at six major airport hubs, courtesy of the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Anthem Foundation.
Each Hands-Only CPR training kiosk features a touch screen with a video program that gives a brief "how-to," followed by a practice session and a 30-second CPR test. With the help of a practice manikin, or a rubber torso, the kiosk provides feedback about the depth and rate of compressions and proper hand placement – factors that influence the effectiveness of CPR.
The kiosks will be available at Chicago O'Hare International (ORD), Indianapolis International (IND), Las Vegas' McCarran International (LAS), Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International (ATL) and Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall (BWI) airports. Two additional kiosks will be available at The Global Center for Health Innovation in Cleveland, Ohio and Anthem's office in Washington, D.C.
Every year, more than 359,000 cardiac arrests occur outside the hospital and more than 20 percent occur in public places like airports, casinos and sporting facilities. "Cardiac arrest. . . survival depends on immediately receiving CPR from someone nearby," said Clifton Callaway, M.D., Ph.D., professor of emergency medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. "Although in-person training is still the best way to learn high-quality CPR, the kiosk will provide additional training that could make a difference and save the life of someone you love."
The pilot kiosk was installed in 2013 at the Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport (DFW). This kiosk, located in Terminal C, Gate 7, has trained more than 25,000 travelers.
Five years ago, AHA simplified the steps of CPR to encourage more people to take action: if a bystander sees a teen or adult collapse, first call 9-1-1, then push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of "Stayin' Alive," which has the perfect cadence for proper CPR. Hands-Only CPR removes the step of rescue breaths; bystanders should simply keep pushing until emergency help arrives.

Other new Dublin Pass developments introduced for spring 2016 include a free guidebook at the National Museum of Ireland for Archaeology and the National Museum of Ireland for Decorative Arts & History.
On a one-day Dublin Pass (€49) you can save money after using your pass three times such as stopping at the Guinness Storehouse (normally €20), Dublin Zoo (€17) and take the hop-on, hop-off bus tour (€19). Visitors on the two-day pass (€69) can save money after visiting five attractions. Three- and five-day passes are also available.
The Dublin Pass is run by The Leisure Pass Group on behalf of Fáilte Ireland, the country's National Tourism Development Authority.
