DOT Changes Reservations Rules
The Department of Transportation announced changes
to deregulate computer reservation systems (CRS). The decades-old regulations date
to pre-internet days when the only CRS technology was owned and operated by the
airlines. Two principal restrictions will be removed. The first will permit
internet services such as Expedia and Travelocity to bias their listing of
airlines in search results as they choose. The second will permit CRS services to
require that airlines disclose all available fares. The changed regulations go
into effect July 31.

EU Passenger Bill of Rights
- Fifteen governments in the European Union passed legislation expanding passenger rights for compensation when inconvenienced by flight delays, cancellations or over-booked flights. The passenger bill of rights goes into effect in 2005.
Under the new legislation, airlines that fly into and out of EU airports must compensate bumped passengers. Compensation is set at 600 Euros ($755) for long-haul flights, 400 Euros ($500) for medium-haul and 250 Euros ($315) for shorter flights. For the first time, passenger rights' legislation includes charter services.
Any delay in excess of two hours will trigger compensation ranging from free meals or travel to hotel accommodations, in the event of an overnight delay. The legislation requires compensation only for problems caused by the commercial objectives of the airline such as over-booking or cancellation of under-booked flights. Passenger inconvenience caused by inclement weather, technical issues, labor strikes or situations beyond the airline's control are not covered.

|10 Questions to Ask When Evaluating Adventure Travel Packages|
When looking at brochures for adventure travel packages, they sound exciting and exotic. When comparing adventure travel vacation packages, it's important to look at the fine print and know what questions to ask to make sure you are getting a great adventure.
In comparing vacations, some tour operators, for example, do not include airfare to the meeting location or destination. Others count travel days as part of the total number of vacation days, meaning the actual vacation/fun days are fewer than what's listed in the brochure. Some offer lesser accommodations versus five-star hotels or tack on taxes or tips that can add up to hundreds of dollars.
Here are some questions you should ask before you commit to a adventure travel vacation.
1. Does my adventure vacation price include airline travel to the destination? Does it include domestic and international airfare?
2. If my vacation is in a foreign country, does the initial quoted price include domestic travel within the country or is that extra? Is the travel by air, bus or sleeper train?
3. How many actual vacation days do I get? Does the number include travel to and from the destination as part of the total number, meaning less actual days for enjoyment?
4. How many activities are included and what is the flexibility? Are any activities optional or incur an added fee?
5. Do I get time to relax, shop or get a massage and what kind of value will I get for my dollar at the destination?
6. Is this an EXTREME vacation -- are activities difficult and taxing in a remote outback location or soft adventure that is challenging but still fun and relaxing?
7. If it is extreme adventure, does that mean extreme accommodations such as sleeping in tents or dirt floor huts -- or do you stay in five-star or somewhat luxurious hotels?
8. What places do we visit and what do we do at each destination? How much time is spent shuttling from place to place (in hours or days)?
9. Are there guides for the activities or are we on our own? How much personal attention do I get for the locale as well as for the sports?
10. Are there other hidden expenses such as tips that are not included in the price that can add up to $100 or more?
