Driving Basics Ease Rough Winter Commutes

Are you prepared to weather dangerous winter driving conditions? Many people are not. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), traffic accidents are the leading cause of death during winter storms. Whether it’s a local commute or traveling to the slopes, when it comes to safe winter driving, "the time to prepare is in your garage, not on the side of the road," advises Buzz Rodland, chairman of the American International Automobile Dealers Association (AIADA). Here are some preparatory tips:

Get a tune-up. If your car is due for scheduled maintenance or just needs a tune-up, do it now. If certain parts are damaged, like the water pump, hoses, and belts, they could unexpectedly leave you stranded.

Check the battery. Cold temperatures reduce a battery's storage capacity, and the more frigid the temperature, the more power your engine needs to start. If your battery is four years old, it's time to replace it.

Check your tires. Tire pressure drops about one pound per square inch (PSI) for every 10-degree shift in temperature. So if your tires were last inflated at summer's peak, chances are they'll be grossly under-inflated when the mercury drops.

Change your oil. Motor oil tends to thicken in cold temperatures, meaning your engine has to work harder. Ask your mechanic to use thinner-grade oil -- one with less viscosity -- during the winter months.

Keep the tank full. If you get stranded, the last thing you want to do is worry about conserving gas, your only source of heat. Also, keeping your gas tank full in the winter prevents moisture from condensing and rusting in your tank.

In icy conditions, traveling at posted speeds can be deadly, particularly while turning and braking. Anticipate curves, turns, and stops and reduce your speed earlier than you normally would. When possible, decelerate instead of braking to prevent spinning out. If you spin out, turn into the skid -- if the front of your car turns to the left, turn the wheel to the left. Practice this in an empty parking lot.

Poor visibility is another leading cause of vehicle collisions during the winter season. Keep your headlights on so other drivers can see you more easily. If it is snowing hard, keep your low beams on; high beams can be blinding. Make sure your rear window defroster works before heading out.

Fly Two to the Sun, Get a Free Ticket

Fly two to the sun and American Airlines will give you a free roundtrip ticket with their promotions featuring nonstop service between Boston or New York and California or Florida.

The promotion gives you two ways to earn free trips: Fly two roundtrips on American's nonstops between New York’s JFK or LaGuardia airports or Newark, NJ to California or Florida by Apr. 15, 2004 and earn one free roundtrip ticket good until Apr. 15, 2005, to anywhere American flies. Or fly two roundtrips on nonstops between Boston and California or Florida during the same dates for a free roundtrip ticket.

If you fly four roundtrips in either promotion by Apr. 15, 2004, you will get two free tickets for use through Apr. 15, 2005, to hundreds of American Airlines destinations. The award ticket is valid for travel in Economy Class and will be booked in "T" booking class. Seats are limited and may not be available on all flights or on all days of the week. Award tickets do not accrue AAdvantage miles or earn miles toward elite-status qualification. Award travel must be booked at least 14 days prior to departure and must include a Saturday-night stay. The maximum stay is 30 days.

You must register before travel begins at www.aa.com/nycfreeticket or www.aa.com/bosfreeticket or call 800/882-8880 and follow the prompts. When asked, enter promotion code AANYC for New York or AABOS for Boston. If you're not an Aadvantage frequent flyer member, registration is quick and easy at www.AA.com.

Travel Tips To Prevent Identity Theft

There are some items people typically keep in their wallets or purses that are better left at home because you risk the danger of identity theft while traveling, according to retired master forger, Frank W. Abagnale, Jr. "Traveling with extra checks in your wallet, credit cards you don't need, or a list of all your bank account numbers is almost an invitation for identity theft," Abagnale warned. "Too often, identity thieves start their work with a stolen wallet or purse. The more information in your wallet or purse, the easier it is for them to steal your identity."

Abagnale's other tips for protecting your identity while traveling include:

Join a service like IdentitySecure (866/263-8258) to help you cancel and replace credit cards if they are lost or stolen.

If you don't need to carry three credit cards while you are traveling, then leave the extra ones at home. Just carry the cards you need while you are on the trip.

Never carry extra checks or bank deposit slips in your wallet or purse.

Never carry a list of all your bank account numbers in your wallet or purse.

Never carry your Social Security card or number on a trip.

Use the hotel safe to safeguard extra cash, identification papers you do not need to carry and cards you are not using that day.

Protect Luggage with Baggage Guard Seals

The pre- numbered, one-time use plastic padlocks are the perfect way to protect your luggage since they cannot be reinstalled once removed. That feature lets you instantly know if someone tampered with your luggage. Yet when TSAs at airports need to inspect your luggage, Baggage Guard Seals can be easily removed. A package of 10 Baggage Guard Seals is still only $9.95.
