    Speed Trap Scams

Hackers are trying to penetrate and get a slice of the lucrative speeding ticket market.

In one scam hackers pretend to be the police department and send emails saying you've been caught on a speed camera and received a violation. You need to log into their phony site to see and pay the violation. When you do, the scammers harvest passwords and personal information to steal your identity. Police departments don't send citations by email. Traffic violations are sent through snail-mail, making this scam fairly easy to spot.

Scammers have used the phone successfully to steal money from unwitting people. In one scam, a woman lost $3,000 to a scammer who used the names of real police officers in her community to rip her off. If you get that phone call, don’t give out your credit card information. Double-check with the real police or sheriff's department. This speed trap version has scammers claiming they are the police or sheriff and want you to pay by phone or online. That’s a tip off as most police departments don't accept speeding ticket payments online or by phone. These are payments typically handled by a court.

Lastly, ask yourself: If I did not receive a speeding ticket in person or through the mail, why am I being asked to pay online or by phone? Take a minute to analyze a suspicious email or call before giving up your credit card information.

    Traveler's Thrombosis

There can be plenty of things to worry about when flying: airport security, travel costs and flight delays. Most people don’t think of health hazards yet flying can be a health hazard for some people who are at risk of getting blood clots.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is the term for a deep blood clot, usually in the leg. Patients may have no symptoms at all, or they can get pain, swelling, redness or warmth along the affected vein. A blood clot is easily treatable but requires immediate attention since a piece can break off and travel to the lungs.

Dr. Deepak Nair, chief of vascular surgery at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Florida and a member of the Society for Vascular Surgery, answers some common questions about this syndrome.

Is deep vein thrombosis really related to travel or is it mostly because the patient is not moving? Is travel more dangerous than working at a desk all day long?
Inactivity for four hours or more may contribute to DVT. Long journeys that offer few options to move pose an increased risk. The risk of DVT doubles after four hours or more of travel, but the absolute risk is still only about 1 in 6,000. That's because DVT occurs when there is a perfect storm of other risk factors.

    What are those risk factors?
Injury to any blood vessel releases chemicals that promote clotting. Recent surgery, a recent IV (intravenous line), or injuries such as a sprained ankle or blunt trauma, all increase the risk of deep venous thrombosis. The longer one waits between these injuries and travel, the less the chance of DVT.

There are reports that people can get DVT from traveling even days after their trip. Why is that?
There likely isn't a time lag. The clot may have already been there during travel and it just grew or matured and then caused symptoms afterwards. However, one study found that the risk of blood clot complications remains elevated for up to four weeks after a flight.

Why is a clot in the leg life-threatening?
A DVT can be life-threatening if it travels to the lungs and gets stuck in a major blood vessel which then limits blood flow to one or both lungs. This puts a major strain on the heart as well.

If I am treated with blood thinners, am I still in danger during this treatment time? How long would I have to be on them?
If the blood thinners are working, then the risk of another blood clot or worsening of the current one is very low. Your physician will determine the length of treatment based on your particular situation.

What if I am at higher risk? I still want to travel.
During a trip, try some seated leg and foot exercises like ankle circles, leg lifts and calf stretches. This encourages blood flow and reduces blood stagnation. Wear loose clothing so that blood flow is not constricted. Ask your doctor if compression stockings will help.

More information about deep vein thrombosis is available on the Society for Vascular Surgery website.

    Failed European Low-Cost Airlines

In recent years a number of low-fare airlines started service, especially in Europe. Some low-fare carriers shut down soon after they started flying, leaving travelers at their destinations stranded and travelers who hadn’t started their trips were left with worthless tickets.

These failures should make you cautious about flying on European low-fare airlines: Anyone planning to use a small low-fare startup should consider buying travel insurance. And buy it from a third party, not the airline: Most airline insurance policies don’t pay off if the corporation that sold them folds. When you factor in the cost of travel insurance, the low-fare rates are no longer low-fare.

Here are some of the casualties.

Primera Air: Their business model of $149 flights to Brussels couldn’t sustain the airline. On Oct. 1, 2018, a month after they started flying, Primera Air declared bankruptcy and shut down.

Monarch Airlines: Failure of U.K.'s fifth largest airline in Oct. 2017 meant British authorities had to bring home 110,000 stranded travelers.

Cobalt Air: Cypriot airline headquartered in Nicosia and based out of Larnaca International Airport. The airline operated from June 2016 until October 2018.

Air Berlin: At its peak, it was Germany's second-largest airline. Headquartered in Berlin, it had hubs at Berlin Tegel Airport and Düsseldorf Airport. After years of losses, Air Berlin ceased operations in October 2017.

Thomas Cook Airlines Belgium: Owned by the Thomas Cook Group, it operated scheduled flights throughout Europe and Africa from its base at Brussels Airport. The airline operated until 2017.

SkyEurope Airlines: Low-cost airline headquartered and based at Bratislava Airport (BTS) in Bratislava, Slovakia. The carrier filed for bankruptcy in August 2009 and suspended all flights in September 2009.

Additionally, established low-cost airline WOW is losing money and seeking a merger with Icelandair. If Icelandair shareholders approve the takeover, Wow would continue operating its own brand.

    Boxing Day Sales

According to Visit London, the official London Visitors site, the post-Christmas period means sales.

Put on a sensible pair of shoes and find bargains in London's Boxing Day sales and January sales. Save money on clothes and fashion, phones, electronics, and everything in between.

Many high street stores in London start their sales on Boxing Day (Dec. 26), or the day after. Sales last until the middle of January. There may be additional price cuts in the final days of the sales around mid-January.

Public transport is limited on Boxing Day (Dec. 26) and New Year's Day. Trains to and from London may be affected by engineering work, so check in advance.

Plan your shopping trip tactically. Choose a particular shopping destination, such as the West End, Covent Garden or Westfield.

Department stores are a safe bet as everything can be found under one roof. Plus there's a chance to grab a coffee if you start to tired.

For designer brands or luxury shopping head to King's Road boutiques or Bond Street. There are also bargains on Oxford Street, Regent Street, and areas such as Seven Dials and Carnaby. For cheap gadgets Tottenham Court Road is a good place for computers and electronics.

    • Some of the big names having sales include:
    • Debenhams: Reductions on everything, from accessories to furniture.
    • Fenwick: Bargains on fashion and accessories at this Bond Street store.
    • Fortnum & Mason: Luxurious food emporium.
