See Paris the Smart Way
|Planning your first Paris city break? Make the most of your trip with insider tips from the experts at Paris Pass (http://www.parispass.com).
The Paris Pass provides access to more than 60 of the city's attractions including the Towers of Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre and the Arc de Triomphe.
"Paris can be a complex city, and it's easy to get confused about the layout and sights. Take a tour first, to work out the geography and after that a little inside knowledge can make all the difference," said Product Marketing Director Amanda Truman.
The Paris Pass team compiled 10 tips to help visitors plan a trip to the city:
- Start with a hop-on, hop-off bus tour. It's a quick and efficient way to get your bearings, see the main sights and decide which ones you want to investigate further.
- Take a trip to the top of Montparnasse Tower and you'll get 360 degree views of the city. Arrive at dusk and you'll catch the Eiffel Tower illuminations, a 10 minute light show which starts every hour. On Friday nights, you can enjoy jazz on the roof terrace.
- See the Louvre without the crowds with an evening visit. Wednesdays and Fridays it's open until 9:45 p.m., after the school groups and tourist buses have gone.
- One of the best photo opportunities is from a cruise on the River Seine. Get your camera ready on departure from the Eiffel Tower, looking north towards Montmartre and the Sacre Coeur.
- In your enthusiasm to get to Notre Dame Cathedral, don't miss Paris's most beautiful church. The 13th century Sainte-Chapelle makes visitors feel like they are inside a jewel.
- Berthillon ice creams are a Paris institution. The original shop is on the Île Saint-Louis, with Notre Dame in full view.
- Make dining reservations early as good restaurants book up fast. Website Ideal Gourmet tells you where the best restaurants are and can make the bookings for you.
- When visiting Montmartre, take the Petit Train to avoid the steep hills and cobbled streets and a good way to see the sights such as the Moulin Rouge.
- Hang out with life-like French and international celebrities at the Musee Grevin wax museum. You can have a photo op to play piano with Elton John.
- Leave your locks at home. Lovers traditionally attach padlocks to the Pont des Arts Bridge as a token of their affection. The practice is having a detrimental effect on the bridge and recently caused a rail to collapse.
A two-day Paris Pass costs €112 for adults, €70 for teens (between 12 and 17 years) and €40 for a child (between four and 11 years). A Paris Pass includes a Metro pass with unlimited travel on the Metro, buses and RER express trains within central Paris, discounts on meals and shopping and priority access at sites to avoid lines plus a free guidebook.
Buy a Paris Pass here. The Pass can be shipped to you prior to travel or collected on arrival in the city.

Explore Greenwich with the London Pass
|The London Pass helps you make the most of a trip to the city's historic borough of Greenwich with a new one-day suggested sightseeing itinerary.
The itinerary, published on the London Pass's informative blog, outlines the perfect day in Greenwich visiting several attractions included on the pass. Among the experiences is the Royal Observatory, newly-introduced to the London Pass portfolio in November 2014.
Maritime Greenwich is a UNESCO World Heritage site with the Royal Observatory, London's center of astronomy. Pass holders gain free entry to Flamsteed House, designed by Sir Christopher Wren as the original Observatory building, and the Meridian Courtyard, saving the normal admission price of £7.70.
You can stand astride two hemispheres at the Prime Meridian line and see the Great Equatorial Telescope, the largest refracting telescope in the UK and the world's seventh largest.
A sister museum to the Royal Observatory, the National Maritime Museum offers the stories of Britain's seafaring past. Maritime art, cartography, ship models and navigational instruments bring to life the days of exploration. Entry to the museum is free, London Pass holders receive a free souvenir guidebook worth £5 on arrival.
The Royal Observatory and National Maritime Museum are in 183-acre Greenwich Park, the oldest enclosed park in London.
On the western edge of the park is one of London's most original museums. The Fan Museum is a collection of more than 4,000 antique and unique fans dating as far back as the 11th century. London Pass holders gain free entry, saving £4.
At the southern edge of Greenwich Park, the Wernher Collection at Ranger's House is the borough's finest art gallery. Its nearly 700 works include early religious paintings, Dutch Old Masters, carved Gothic ivories and Renaissance treasure. Entry is free for London Pass holders, who save £6.90.
A one-day London Pass is £49 per adult and £33 per child (aged 5-15), and can be purchased online.
Safety Tips for Winter Road Conditions
|The American Trucking Associations wants the motoring public to prepare for winter storms so motorists arrive to their destinations safely. Winter road conditions can lead to dangerous situations. Fortunately, a team of million mile accident-free drivers are helping to make our roads safer.
America's Road Team Captains, elite professional truck drivers offer advice on how to safely navigate through winter road conditions. Tips include:
- Map your route: Know where you are going and be prepared, ahead of time, to exit off the highway when needed. Indecisive driving is a major cause of traffic problems.
- Avoid extreme weather conditions: Ice, hail and snow make roads difficult to travel. Avoid driving through extreme weather conditions, and travel during daylight as much as possible.
- Remove ice and snow from your vehicle: Clear your windows and roof of snow for maximum visibility and avoid creating a hazard for the vehicle behind you. Don't allow ice and snow to create additional blind spots on your vehicle.
- Slow Down: With winter weather conditions present, speeding becomes increasingly hazardous. Allow plenty of a space cushion and reduce your speed.
- Prepare an emergency kit: Contents should include: battery powered radio, flashlight, blanket, jumper cables, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, bottled water, non-perishable foods, maps, tire repair kit and flares.
- Watch for black ice, a thin layer of transparent ice that forms when temperatures are close to freezing. Black ice may make the road look slightly wet and is difficult to spot. Watch for ice build-up on your mirror arms, the antenna of your vehicle and the top corners of your windshield, all signs pointing to the formation of black ice on the roadways. Once the spray from tires on vehicles in front of you stops, the highways most likely are full of black ice.
- Be aware of truck blind spots: When sharing the road with large trucks, be cognizant of their large blind spots. If you can't see the truck driver in his or her mirrors, then the truck driver can't see you.
- Do not cut in front of large trucks: Remember that trucks are heavier and take longer to make a complete stop. Avoid cutting quickly in front of them.
- Keep your eyes on the road: Distracted driving is a major cause of traffic accidents. Just two seconds of distraction time for a motorist double the chances of an accident. Use your cell phone when stopped and never text while driving.
- Leave early and avoid risks: Leave early to avoid anxiety associated with arriving late to your destination and to accommodate potential unforeseen delays.
- Buckle up: Safety belts reduce the risk of fatal injury by 45 percent and are a simple way to increase your safety on the road.
"One of the largest driving concerns during times of cold weather is that of following distances. When the roads are slick, your normal following distance needs to double in length for snow and triple in length for icy conditions," said Don Logan, America's Road Team Captain (FedEx Freight) from Eskridge, Kan.
The American Trucking Association is the largest national trade association for the trucking industry.
