Bermuda Temperature Guarantee
|Two hours from the U.S. East Coast, lies the island of Bermuda, which along with coconut palms, coral-pink sand, and turquoise waters offers a moderate sub-tropical climate all-year-long. Bermuda’s largest resort offers a money-back guarantee for the temperate weather conditions.
Bermuda is a year-round outdoor destination that experiences neither the chills of the northeast U.S. nor the intense heat of the Caribbean. Blue skies with sunshine and mild temperatures are the default setting, thanks to the Gulf Stream and Bermuda Azores-High.
For vacations from November 2017 through March 2018, the Fairmont Southampton resort offers a ‘Bermuda Shorts’ temperature guarantee, ensuring that the daytime temperature will reach at least 71̊F November through December 2017, or 63̊F from January until March 2018. If not, the hotel room for that night will be free. A win-win situation for hotel guests: Enjoy temperate weather or stay a night for free. The special offer includes holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve and Easter.
The resort levy and gratuity are additional, to be paid by the guest. The offer is not available for groups and is for new bookings only. A two night minimum stay is required. Black-out dates and other restrictions may apply.
In addition, the Fairmont Southampton provides an ‘Experience Southampton’ guest program with daily activities at the resort to its guests – come rain or shine.

10 Tips for Consuming Alcohol Overseas
|Mexican authorities seized more than 10,000 gallons of tainted alcohol and opened an investigation into an illicit manufacturer who supplied resorts, nightclubs and restaurants. In light of these actions, travel insurance provider Allianz Global Assistance shares reminders of alcohol consumption safeguards while traveling overseas
"Whether staying at an all-inclusive resort or a home sharing rental, staying alert and being prepared when traveling is vital," said Kimberly Seay, RN, director of Travel Assistance at Allianz Global Assistance USA, and a former ER/Trauma nurse. Seay recommends the following 10 tips for travelers consuming alcohol on vacation:
- Drink in moderation/limit alcohol usage
- Insist on watching your drink being made
- If you are suspicious of the color, then trust your instincts and - do not drink it
- Bottled or can beer does appear to be a safer option
- Insist that the beer is opened in your presence
- Buy your own alcohol at "duty free" shops and only drink what you brought, even if you are required to pay a "corkage fee"
- Never, ever, leave your drink unattended
- Be observant and aware of your surroundings
- If you feel ill, seek attention immediately
- If you have a travel insurance provider, call them if you need help finding medical care, or if you are admitted to a hospital.
Because destinations cannot guarantee that tourists will remain 100 percent safe on their vacation due to unforeseen situations, it's important that you remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions before and during your trip.
Something as unpredictable as tainted alcohol can turn what is supposed to be a relaxing vacation into a medical emergency.

Pittsburgh First to Allow Public to Access Gates
|Pittsburgh International Airport, in cooperation with the Transportation Security Administration, will become the first airport in the U.S. to allow the public to access gates, shops and restaurants beyond the security checkpoint without requiring an airline ticket and no reduction in security.
As part of a TSA pilot program, the public will have year-round access to the Airside Terminal at Pittsburgh International Airport for shopping, dining and meeting/greeting passengers. Through the new “myPITpass” program, members of the public will be able to access the Airside Terminal by following these procedures.
- Check in on third floor ticketing level (Across from Allegiant)
- Show a valid photo ID (Driver’s License or Passport)
- Have name vetted against No Fly list and obtain stamped myPITpass
- Go through security checkpoint observing the same rules as passengers boarding flights.
Hours for issuing passes are Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the possibility of additional hours and weekend days in coming months. The pass is only valid on the day of issuance.
The same security requirements as ticketed passengers will be followed, ensuring no reduction in security. Ticketed passengers will receive priority in the checkpoint line, and the public going Airside will be strictly vetted and screened as if they were boarding a plane. All rules for carry-on luggage will also apply to those receiving the myPITpass for Airside access.

Avoid Headaches When Planning a Trip
|Whether you’re a college student planning a spring break trip or a family looking to book your next vacation, budgets can be tight. Travelers usually look for deals on flights and accommodations. The Better Business Bureau of Central Ohio offers the following tips to make sure you don’t run into any road bumps while traveling:
Be wary of travel deals that seem too good to be true. Be cautious of deals that offer packages that seem like an outstanding bargain (five-star hotels, premium airline tickets, etc.) but require immediate payment. If a site offers a hotel deal, call the actual hotel to verify that the company offering the deal has a relationship with the hotel and make sure the room exists.
Get details about your trip in writing. Confirm the names of the hotels and airlines, total cost of both, any restrictions that may apply, flights and hotel reservations and car rental. Don’t rely only on the receipt or confirmation email; call to confirm all arrangements in advance.
Deal with reputable agents or sites when booking travel and carefully check reservation policies and other fine print before booking deals. Package deals may be touted as “all-inclusive,” so understand exactly what is included.
Pay with a credit card. Paying by credit card offers the most consumer protection, should you need to challenge the charges.
Consider purchasing travel insurance. Travel insurance provides coverage for particular perils which are specific conditions under which it will pay claims, such as trip cancellations or medical emergencies. The U.S. Travel Insurance Association maintains a list of licensed travel insurance companies. Certain travel companies have different policies and levels of coverage based on whether you purchase the car rental, flight or hotel. Shop around and read the terms and conditions before purchasing.
Be wary of claims that you “won” a trip. Unsolicited mail, email and websites saying you have “won a trip” may be scams. If you’ve won a free vacation, a legitimate business won’t ask you to pay any upfront or processing fees.
Be mindful of your social media posts. It’s hard to resist posting pictures of beautiful scenery and fun times, but doing so has the potential to inform scammers and thieves that you are not at home and can open up the possibility of home or identity theft.
Parents and other relatives should also be on guard if they get calls supposedly coming from students stranded in distant locations, as this can be a scam as well. This so-called “relative scam” usually starts with a call from someone claiming to be a person you know (often a child or grandchild), who is stranded or needs money to get out of jail or deal with another emergency.
If you get such a call, resist any request to send money immediately. Ask for a contact phone number, and then check with other relatives to determine if there is a chance a family member is stranded. A request for you to send money through any alternative payment methods, such as a wire transfer or prepaid card, is often a scam.
If planning ahead isn’t for you, and you want to take a last minute trip, there are still ways to be safe. Let a family member or close friend know where you are going, how to contact you, and an idea of your itinerary. Before you leave, make sure that you have a map of the area you are visiting, GPS, and a way to charge your smartphone. Finally, vacationers should avoid traveling alone in order to have the safest trip possible.
Summer School at Oxford University
|If you’ve ever wanted to go to Oxford University, take heart. It’s not too late. Online registration for the 2018 Oxford Experience, a one-week summer course at Oxford University, is open.
The Oxford Experience has no requirements, costs $1,992 for the week, and includes a choice of more than 60 varied courses, and accommodations with private bath in Christ Church. You receive all meals in Tudor Hall (familiar from the Harry Potter films), evening entertainment and guest lectures, welcome reception and “graduation” dinner, and free WiFi throughout the college. There are no tests or papers, and some interesting excursions to stately homes, cathedrals and museums.
The 2018 program, which runs July 1 to August 11, takes place at Christ Church, the most beautiful of all Oxford colleges. The dormitory buildings, which range from the 18th to the 20th century and where English prime ministers and poets once lived, are comfortable, if not luxurious. Participants who sign up for more than one week are welcome to stay over the intervening weekends.
2018 course offerings include: 500 Years of the English Garden; The Arts and Crafts Movement; Byzantine Constantinople; The Beatles, Popular Music and Sixties Britain; Turkey and Iran: Rivals in the Middle East; and A History of Cosmology across Five Centuries.
During the week there are tours of Christ Church and Oxford, excursions, riverside walks in Christ Church Meadow, and boating on the Isis (as the Thames is called in Oxford). At night there might be a historic pub walk, wine and croquet in the Masters’ Garden, a lecture, and Evensong in the college chapel, which is also the Oxford Cathedral. Once a week each participant is invited to dine on High Table and, on the final night, there is a champagne reception in the flowering Cathedral Garden and a gala dinner in Hall.
The registration deadline is Apr. 1, 2018, but many courses fill up quickly, so early application is advisable.
