Like some things in life, the best things to enjoy about Kauai, Hawaii, are pretty affordable.
Referred to as "the Garden Island" Kauai's diverse setting allows you to discover nature's beauty in the tropics. Whether a first-time visitor or you’ve been here many times, Kauai is a plethora of sights and wonders that can be fascinating and affordable. The following are 10 ways to enjoy Kauai for f.ree or nearly fr.ee.
- Explore Waimea Canyon the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." A mile wide, 10 miles long and more than 3,500-feet deep, take in the stunning views from the lookouts or hike into the crater. The Kalalau Lookout is an unforgettable view of the once cultivated valley that descends 4,000 feet to the Pacific. After sightseeing, enjoy a picnic at the top of the crater in Kokee State Park.
- Hike amid rainforests and lush valleys. Hiking trails immerse you into Kauai's wilderness. Hikes range from comfortable walks to challenging treks into hidden valleys streaming with waterfalls. A must-do for any serious hiker is the 11-mile Kalalau Trail along the Napali Coast.
- Kauai's cherished sites. Prince Kuhio Park was home to Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole (1871-1922). Known as the "People's Prince," Prince Kuhio worked tirelessly for Hawaii's people and was the last royal heir to the Hawaiian throne. This historical setting features the foundation of Prince Kuhio's home, a royal fishpond, an offerings shrine and heiau (ancient place of worship) where the kahuna (priests) meditated and lived.
Enjoy Kauai's culture. Hawaii is the only state with its own music, language and dance. On Kauai, many hotels offer fre.e hula performances, torch lighting ceremonies, and lei-making courses, among other cultural offerings. Coconut Marketplace in Kapaa and Harbor Mall in Lihue stage f.ree hula shows every Wednesday.
A bird watcher's paradise. For a nominal entry fee, the Kilauea National Wildlife Refuge is a special setting for bird lovers. Framed by breathtaking views of Kauai's north shore, endangered birds nest in the cliffs, including the Hawaiian Gallinule, red-footed boobies, tropicbirds, albatrosses and frigate birds. In the ocean, you may see Hawaiian monk seals, green sea turtles and Hawaiian spinner dolphins.
A river runs through it. The only navigable rivers in Hawaii are found on Kauai. Rent a kayak and paddle along one of the gentle rivers bordered by tropical foliage. Or, journey by river boat up the Wailua River to the Fern Grotto. In this jungle-like setting, a natural amphitheater was formed creating remarkable acoustics.
Kauai's quaint towns. Koloa is a historic 19th century plantation town, the site of Hawaii's first sugar plantation. Every July, Koloa Plantation Days celebrate the town's heritage.
- Alekoko Fishpond was built for a young chief and once covered 40 acres marked by a 2,700-foot long stone wall. Located in the Huleia National Wildlife Refuge, it is a habitat for endangered Hawaiian birds.
- The scenic Wailua River was once a sacred place reserved for the kings and high chiefs of Kauai. Near the river's mouth, in Lydgate State Park, are the remains of a heiau that was a place of refuge for those who broke a kapu (taboo).
Waterfall spectacular. Kauai's waterfalls are a year- round display of nature. In Lihue, you can drive up to Wailua Falls. If the 80-foot waterfalls look vaguely familiar, it was in the opening credits of the 1970s TV show Fantasy Island.
- Hanapepe’s old-fashioned small-town appeal include plantation-era buildings and a slow-paced lifestyle. Every Friday evening, stroll along Main Street to see fine art in Hanapepe's nine galleries and listen to live entertainment.
Experience Kauai's history. In Lihue, the Kauai Museum tells the island's story from its formation and the arrival of the first Polynesians to the start of the sugar plantation, and the ethnic cultures that contributed to its history.
- In Wailua, Opaekaa Falls is the island's most accessible major waterfall.
Hit the beach. Kauai has more than 50 miles of white sand beaches, more beach per mile than any other Hawaiian island. Altogether, 43 beaches beckon to wile away the day. Whether enjoying Poipu or a secluded cove at Anini, Kauai's range of beaches matches the island's diversity. For the more adventurous, rent a snorkel and see the undersea beauty of Kauai's marine world.
- Grove Farm, one of Hawaii's earliest sugar plantations, offers a museum display of Kauai's heritage highlighting the old sugar days and the monarchy through statehood.
- Waioli Mission in Hanalei is where the Wilcox family, one ofKauai's most influential families, moved to in the 1800s. Their historic New England-style home was shipped in pieces from Boston around Cape Horn and stands as a showcase of koa wood furniture and other artifacts from that era.

The Canadian government enacted the first airline passengers' bill of rights in North America. Canada's bill of rights is more comprehensive than the European Union regulations specifically addressing "strandings," allowing passengers to deplane after a 90 minute tarmac delay, with the option to re-board the plane.
Under the new law, Canadian airlines are required to provide stranded travelers with updated flight delay and schedule change information, and meal vouchers for extended delays of four hours and hotel vouchers for extended delays of eight hours.
Transport Minister Lawrence Cannon announced the program, nicknamed "Flight Rights." The bill received unanimous support in the House of Commons.
In the U.S., passengers' rights legislation has been stalled in Congress primarily due to disagreements among members on funding for air traffic control modernization and related programs. Most of that legislation gives the airlines up to three hours to give passengers the right to deplane - twice the 90 minutes now required by the Canadian law.
