    Georgia Online Leaf Tracking

Soon, Georgia’s forests will turn red, orange and gold, attracting “leaf peepers.” To help track the changing leaves and plan autumn escapes, Georgia’s State Parks will launch Leaf Watch 2007 online Oct. 1, 2007 through mid-November.

Whether traveling to the Appalachians for hiking and biking, or heading south for canoeing and camping, Leaf Watch 2007 will offer advice on where and when to find the best color at Georgia’s state parks. You can read regular updates by park rangers, get safety tips for hiking and camping, and learn why leaves change color.

Leaf Watch 2007 also provides links to reserve campsites, cottages and lodge rooms at Georgia’s state parks. The link includes a web cam showing the mountainside of Black Rock Mountain State Park.

Typically, northern Georgia peaks in late October; however, color can be seen as early as September and as late as mid-November. Some parks in southern Georgia put on a display during late autumn, particularly those with cypress trees and tea-colored swamps.

Of Georgia’s 48 state parks, six of the most popular for leaf watching include Amicalola Falls, Black Rock Mountain, Cloudland Canyon, Tallulah Gorge, Unicoi and Vogel.

For quieter getaways, explore lesser-known parks, which can be just as vibrant, such as Providence Canyon State Park, frequently called “Georgia’s Little Grand Canyon,” Watson Mill Bridge State Park, beside the state’s longest covered bridge and the 23-mile Pine Mountain Trail at F.D. Roosevelt State Park near Columbus.

Winter temperatures typically range from 40 to 60 degrees with lows around 20 degrees. While the monument does receive some snow, it is generally no more than a few inches.

Thunderbird Lodge is the only lodging facility in Canyon de Chelly National Monument. The lodge sits on the site of a trading post built in 1896, and its cafeteria-style restaurant is located in the trading post's original building. The Thunderbird Lodge gift shop and rug room offer some of the region's finest examples of Native American jewelry, crafts and Navajo rugs and other mementos.

Thunderbird Lodge also offers authorized group tours in Canyon de Chelly in six-wheel drive vehicles operated by Navajo guides who explain about the canyon, one of the most sacred, historic and culturally significant places in the Navajo Nation. You see Anasazi ruins, pictographs, petroglyphs and the sites of confrontations between the Navajo and the Spanish, Mexican and American governments.

During the winter, half-day tours to the lower halves of Canyon de Chelly and Canyon del Muerto leave from Thunderbird Lodge. Through Mar. 1, 2008, rates for half-day tours are $40.95 for adults and $31.50 for children 12 and under. During the winter, tours are conducted only if at least six guests participate.
