    Blacklisted Airlines

Prompted by the European Commission to produce an EU-wide list of banned airlines, Belgium and France released their blacklisted airlines.

Nine of the 14 blacklisted airlines are based in Africa, while two are based in eastern Europe.

The Civil Aviation Authority of France (DGAC) published the following five airlines which are prohibited from landing in France:

    • Air Koryo (North Korea, banned since April 2001)
    • Air Saint-Thomas (USA Virgin Islands, banned since March 2003)
    • International Air Services (Liberia, banned since January 2004)
    • Lineas Aer de Mozambique (Mozambique, banned since December 2004)
    • Phuket Airlines (Thailand, banned since June 2005).

The Ministry of Transport of Belgium published a list of nine banned airlines:

    • Africa Lines (Central African Republic)
    • Air Memphis (Egypt)
    • Air Van Airlines (Armenia)
    • Central Air Express (Democratic Republic of Congo)
    • I.C.T.T.P.W. (Libya)
    • International Air Tours Limited (Nigeria)
    • Johnsons Air Limited (Ghana)
    • Silverback Cargo Freighters (Rwanda)
    • South Airlines (Ukraine)

Although the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, brokered a deal to create an EU-wide criteria for a blacklist, it is having difficulty finding consensus. France and Belgium chose to publish their lists. The EU Transport Commissioner Jacques Barrot has welcomed the move.

The French government said it would increase the number of checks on aircraft landing in France. Companies organizing package tours will soon be required to inform travelers of the airline they will be traveling on.

    Gas-Saving Myths and Truths

Edmunds.com, the online automotive resource, recently tested several of the most often cited gas-saving tips to see which are "urban legends" and which actually save money at the pumps.

The tests were to learn what tips produced measurable differences in fuel economy -- differences that are detectable by an ordinary driver, not a lab technician. The tested tips and results were:

Tip: Use cruise control to save fuel.
Test Result: True -- at a surprisingly significant level.

Tip: Driving with open windows is less efficient than using air conditioning.
Test Result: Negligible -- both methods produced roughly the same mileage per gallon.

Tip: To dramatically improve mileage, buy a more fuel-efficient vehicle.
Test Result: False -- there are huge savings for drivers who change their driving style from "lead-foot" to "feather-foot."

Tip: Properly inflated tires are more efficient than tires with low pressure.
Test Result: True -- and there are other benefits, too, including safety and tire longevity.

Phil Reed, author of Edmunds.com's "Strategies for Smart Car Buyers" said "Throughout our tests, the biggest savings in gas mileage occurred when we drove in a relaxed fashion rather than having a heavy foot on the gas and brake. We found that if you slowed your 0-to-60 time down to 20 seconds from a normal driving pace of 10 to 15 seconds, you'll save gas immediately."
