Travel Safety Tips from National Crime Prevention Council

The National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC), home of McGruff the Crime Dog, suggests following these safety tips to avoid problems during your travels:
Personal Travel Plan: Think Before You Go
    • File a travel plan. Let someone know where you are going, the route you plan to take, when you plan to arrive and how to contact you. If you deviate from that plan, let someone know.
    • Travel with friends. There is safety in numbers.
    • Make sure your house appears “lived-in” when you are away. Lock all doors and windows, set household lights (inside and out) on timers.
    • Trim your hedges and bushes so thieves cannot have a place to hide out.
    • Have a neighbor park a car in your driveway to make it appear as if someone is home.
    • Have a neighbor pick up your mail and newspapers while you are away or have them held at the post office.
    • Invest in an alarm. An alarm system controls access points to your home and lets you know if someone has invaded your space.
      Driving: On the Road Again
    • Always lock your car doors. Keep valuables out of sight, preferably in the trunk of your car.
    • Never pick up hitchhikers.
    • Park in well-lighted areas and close to the building.
    • Do not stop alongside the road if possible. If your car is bumped from behind or if someone indicates there is something wrong with your car, go to a service station or a well-lighted, populated area and call for help.
    • Fill the gas tank before dark; lock your car doors and roll up your windows if you step away from the car for any reason.
      Travel Destination: Checking In
    • Use all hotel locks and other security devices, even when you’re in your room.
    • Store valuables in the room safe or in the facility’s main safe.
    • Don’t tell strangers the name of your hotel, your room number, or other personal information.
    • Guard your room keys. Don’t leave them unattended or visible at restaurants, the pool, or clubs.
    • Don’t prop open your door or open your door to strangers. Use the peep hole before opening the door.
    • Don’t leave your purse or bags unattended at hotel buffets or lounges.
      Personal Safety: On the Town
    • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Take only the cash you need in your purse or wallet.
    • Limit the number of credit cards you carry. Bring only the necessary credit card(s) with you and carry money separately from credit cards.
    • Women should keep purses closed and snuggled tightly against the body.
    • Men should keep wallets in a front pants pocket or coat pocket.
    • Know your route and stick to well-lighted, well-traveled streets.
    • If you feel threatened, get away and call for help, or try to go to a crowded place.
    • Always let someone know where you are going, who you are with, and when you will return.
    • Avoid going off with strangers, and always use the buddy system.
    • Avoid using alcohol and other drugs. Impaired judgment can put you in potentially dangerous situations.
    • Select ATM machines in visible, well-lighted locations.

How to Choose a Paris Rental By Alex Wagner, Founder and CEO of A la Carte Paris

The difficulty of being confronted by too much choice is perhaps best captured by the French expression, "l'embarras du choix" (stuck for choice).

    Perhaps I can help.

Here are some specific pointers on how to choose a Paris rental, what’s the best location and what to avoid.

    What location is best?

Rule #1: Stay central. Base your search within the most central areas of Paris:

  • Marais
  • St Germain
  • Eiffel Tower / rue Cler
  • Ile St Louis
  • Etoile / Champs Elysées
  • Latin Quarter
  • Louvre

Frankly, you can't go wrong in these most central and sought-after parts of Paris. These areas are all safe, even late at night. All typically offer beautiful architecture, a lively street atmosphere, many cafe terraces, good restaurants and shops, plus major monuments and sights within immediate walking distance.

And what about fabled Montmartre, as featured in the French film Amélie Poulain? Well, Montmartre is far too off-center to be practical for a short stay visiting Paris. I would however warmly recommend you spend a day there.

Rule #2: Left and Right banks are both good
Within these great districts, the Seine marks a cleavage between the left and right banks.

The left bank (St Germain, Latin Quarter, Eiffel / rue Cler) tends to be more residential, arty and left-wing socialist (despite St Germain being the most expensive Paris district, leading to the ironic expression "la gauche caviar").

The right bank (Marais, Etoile / Champs Elysées, Louvre) tends to be a shade more commercial and right-wing conservative.

Within this basic cleavage there are nonetheless big nuances from district to district.

Both left and right banks are great, so unless you happen to already have a preference I wouldn't worry too much about choosing between them.

Rule #3: If on a budget, consider downsizing or alternate dates before leaving the center
If your budget won't stretch to the most central locations, then you might be tempted to book an apartment in a less central location. You'll have no trouble finding such apartments in the less central districts (9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 14th, 15th).

However there are some downsides to these B-list locations. While safe and objectively good value for money, in my opinion they are not nearly as attractive or desirable (this is reflected in lower real estate prices there). They don't really don't offer "that quintessential Paris experience". What's more, you would have to use public transport quite a lot, as you wouldn't have everything within immediate walking distance of your apartment.

Instead of moving outwards, if you are on a tighter budget, you might consider booking a studio, or choose low season dates if possible (avoiding waiting in line and feeling crowded by tourists...). That way you will still enjoy the most vibrant Paris experience possible.

    What size is best?

For couples: Most couples opt for a one-bedroom. Although studios can offer savings, our guests tend to prefer having a separate living room and bedroom - something that hotels cannot economically offer.

Some couples like to book a two-bedroom apartment to have more space to spread out with a slightly larger living room, perhaps using the second bedroom as a dressing room. In Paris, space is the ultimate luxury...

For a small family or a group of 3 or 4 friends:
A two-bedroom is the natural choice. In many of the apartments, you can specify the arrangement for the second bedroom: either two singles or one double. For extra comfort, having two bathrooms is best.

That said, serious savings can be made by booking a one-bedroom equipped with a sleeper sofa (almost all our apartments are).

    For larger families and groups:
Larger than two-bedroom apartments are quite rare so a good idea is to package two or more apartments within immediate walking distance of each other. That way you can all get together in one of the living rooms and then just split up for the night.
